Lately as I've been perusing my gun catalogs for potential C&R purchases, I've been seeing several non-C&R firearms which appeal to me. The problem is that I don't know of an FFL in the area who will order the arms for me. Here has been my experience so far:
Gun shop #1 (listed on gunbroker): Charges $35 for a transfer, and made it clear that he will ONLY transfer guns that he can't order for customers himself (presumably adding on his own markup). Unloaded on me a tirade about doing transfers being detrimental to his business. If he doesn't want my money for transfers then he doesn't want my money, period.
Gun dealer (also listed on gunbroker): When I tried to do a transfer, he spent a lot of time trying to convince me that I didn't want the gun I was interested in buying. More interested in ordering other stuff to sell to me than helping me transfer what I really wanted. I finally gave up trying.
Gun shop #2 (one of my favorites, actually): When asked what they would charge for a transfer, or what they would require in markup to order a gun for me they would never give an answer. Although they deal in collector guns, they didn't seem happy to deal with a C&R holder who had the wholesaler prices in hand. I can't blame them for wanting to protect their profit in general, but why give up the opportunity to make a few bucks just for handling paperwork?
Friend (an old kitchen table dealer who has somehow retained his FFL): A nice guy who would probably do the transfers for me, but in RKBA discussions it became apparent that he is clueless on firearms laws. If I were to ask him to order/transfer for me I'd be seriously afraid that he would get himself or me in trouble by overlooking local/federal/BATF regs somehow.
Perhaps I'm expecting too much, but I'm getting tired of looking. Can anyone recommend an 01 FFL in the St. Louis area who is willing to do transfers without making it a painful experience?
