I plan to move to Virginia within the next few months. At this time, I don't have a specific place I'm moving to. Therefore, I'm open to different areas in Virginia. For those that have lived in Virginia for awhile, are you able to help me with information about your part of the state? If you are willing to help me out with info., please email me at: [email protected] I can give you my background info. and some specific things I'm looking for in an area. I have been to the library and on the internet learning about Virginia, but I would like to correspond with real people and get some honest feedback. I look forward to the move and fun shootin times.

Thanks a bunch.

Welcome to THR, hi-impact, and welcome to the Old Dominion too. Are you following a job assignment? Generally the idea is to get as far away from Northern Virginia as possible without getting into Richmond city or certain areas in Tidewater (Norfolk/Hampton roads). Tell us your constraints and there are a number of Virginians on THR who would be glad to help.

Hey, I like living in the City of Richmond. At least in my little part of it between Monument Avenue and Cary Street.

And our City Council is the funniest show on television. Of course, they need to fill the vacancy created by Federal bribery conviction of one member last week, but they're getting good at filling vacancies. :)

If you have gun-related replies for the thread starter about Virginia, post them here.

If your post is not gun-related, please drop him an email so that the thread doesn't have to be closed for being off topic.

Thanks.

I couldn't think of another city in the world that lined its streets with stone leviathans honoring failed rebels against the state. -- Tony Horwitz, "Confederates in the Attic", regarding Richmond, Virginia's Monument Avenue

Thank you for the kind welcome. Please see above post by Pax (Moderator). It will probably be helpful if I gave you some background info. Therefore, anyone willing to help, send me an email and I can send you info.

Thank you much.

I was sort of hoping he'd give us a hint about his job prospects and what he likes to shoot and/or hunt so we could narrow it down. I know a good inexpensive outdoor gun club over in the Valley near Lexington that I belong to. I know a good inexpensive outdoor gun club over by the Richmond airport that I belong to. There's another one NW of Richmond and a another good one south of Charlottesville. I know lot's o' stuff, including some free places to shoot, but like the man said, it's a big state.

P.S. - I get a perverse kick out of the following every single time I see it. The author is clueless.

"I couldn't think of another city in the world that lined its streets with stone leviathans honoring failed rebels against the state. -- Tony Horwitz, "Confederates in the Attic", regarding Richmond, Virginia's Monument Avenue"

Not a one of them rebelled against their state - The Old Dominion - they fought to defend it and they lost. Now many folks say the federal government has too much power.

Sic Semper Tyrannis.

Good info -- and a good point, John.

Rereading my last post, it sounded too gruff. It wasn't meant that way and I hope no one took offense.

hi-impact, what part of the state are you thinking of moving to? Lots of folks able and willing to post info on shooting places, gun laws, firearms dealers, etc etc but it is helpful if it is narrowed down to a region.

Re the quote at the end of my last post, I must apologize again. I know there's a lot in that quote to criticize; I put it up because it tickled me to put up a quote that referred to Virginia and it was the only one in my files. I think Mal's right about the meaning of the word "state" there -- but I'm certainly not up to debating the history, origins, rights, wrongs, and meaning of that war.

Based on what you know about him in history books, what do you think Abraham Lincoln would be doing if he were alive today?
1. Writing his memoirs of the Civil War.
2. Advising the President.
3. Desperately clawing at the inside of his coffin.

10-4 on No VA - the housing costs are silly, traffic purely sucks, but it IS still Virginia, which means 'shall issue' CCW, a fair selection of gun shops & ranges, and decent enough hunting & fishing within an hour's drive, which beats the wee out of DC/MD.

I'll e-mail you my 411 if you have any specific questions about this area.

I'm thinking about the Richmond area, but would like to hear about other areas as well. I'm open to other places, because I'm not following any job assignment when I make the move. I have alot of questions. For fear of violating any forum rules, I think it would be best if we correspond by email. If you can help out with any info. please send me an email.

Thanks, for the email Cook, email back ya.

Mike, yes I have many questions, send me an email.

Thanks

"I believe Horwitz was using 'state' to mean 'country', not an individual state of the US."

Of course he is. That's why he'll never understand. ;) The country was founded as united individual states, not the one big monolithic entity we see today with quaint names for different sections.

hi-impact - I'll have to get back to you on this. Time to hit the road before any more inter-office foolishness disrupts my quiet morning at work. John

Hi-Impact: Welcome. I love living in Richmond.

JohnBT: I would be interested in hearing about the club out by the airport.

BTW, there is a lot more to Richmond than the Fan :neener: (the area between Cary and Monument). There are plenty of nice places to live. I would agree though, that the city counsel makes for good tv.
