Well I'm trying to make a decision at this point, kind of broke and I have 2 rifles left (my romanian G ak47 and D-Technik VZ58) and I'm thinking of selling both and just getting a handgun. I don't really go to the range much, a SHTF situation is kind of impractical, and in all honesty they just kind of sit around collecting dust. Would I be better off just selling them and getting a decent handgun and saving cash or would that be a bad idea? I'm not even sure what I could sell them for at this point.

What qualifies as a decent handgun? What would you use it for?

If you are strapped for cash, have you considered a Hi-Point? They do not cost much. You could sell only one of those rifles and have enough money to buy the Hi-Point plus ammo and range trips.

If you find that the Hi-Point does not suit your needs, you can always get a handgun in a higher price range when your situation improves.

Good luck!

I personally wouldn't settle for a Hi-Point or Jennings/Jiminez or whatever they're named now.

What's the use? Plinking? Carry? Home Defense?

Mainly home defense and carry, realistically I can't see myself using my AK or VZ in a home defense situation. I sold my only handgun a few months ago when I was strapped for cash and had a H&K USP .45 but it wasn't very good for carry. I was thinking of a springfield XD .40 S&W or something. I know theres a lot of panic about holding onto rifles because they may be banned but I really don't use them other for the range.

I'm not even sure what I could sell them for at this point.

More than you might expect. I'd say $500 or more for the "G" and quite a bit more for the VZ. Check Gunbroker for the price ranges. But I wouldn't sell them. First off you should not sell any Czech-made firearm. Secondly that "G" is about the closest thing you can find comparable to the fantastic SAR-1's. I'd say both of those are keepers.

realistically I can't see myself using my AK or VZ in a home defense situation.

Why not? It's just a question of using the proper SP or HP ammo. Those are righteous and fearsome. Never go with the second best option when your life depends on it. And a handgun is a distant third or fourth compared with those.

I already sold off my Galil and HK USP and I got ripped off on both the sales, I was thinking of selling the AK and keeping the VZ.

ammo wise, the ak would be cheaper to shoot & ammo is more plentiful than a .40 pistol, that might be a point for keeping the ak,too.

No, don't get rid of rifles; at least not your LAST rifle.

Handguns are ONLY for fighting your way to your longgun, which you should never have put down to begin with. AND, they happen to be more fun to shoot at the range (to me anyway).

If you want a handgun for CCW or home defense, then sell one, not both.

Sell one if you must, but the question comes up.........is this a short term solution to a long term problem?

IE; would the circumstances that have you selling a rifle or two now to buy a handgun also compell you to sell that handgun later down the road?

If you must sell, pick one to keep. Maybe the one with the most (or cheapest) magazines. You should get enough to buy that XD, but if money is tight, any semi-auto you get should be in 9mm.

Then, stock up on magazines and ammo as you're able.

id sell the rifle worth the most and buy a pistol

there is nothing wrong with buying a used pistol if you inspect it first that would save you some cash

or you could look for someone interested in a trade

While they may be collecting dust, you don't have to feed them and they aren't charging you rent. If you must have a sidearm, sell one and keep one, but not both.

One of the stories my grandfather told was of a 'swing block' Springfield he sold in 1938. He still regretted not being able to keep the weapon nearly 70 years later.

Cover yourself for a SHTF situation. Protect yourself. Go to the range and plink.
Sell them and buy a 4" .357mag. Ruger GP100 would be my first choice.
Depending on what you get for those guns, you might have enough left over for a shotgun, too.

personally I would sell the VZ. It should bring in more money than the Romanian and AK mags are cheaper.

The money I get from that would give me enough to buy a surplus Berreta 92 or Sig 226 from J&G or Aimsurplus. You could also get a trade in Glock if you want .40cal and easy to carry. Given money is tight I would go 9mm for ammo price.
You should have money left over for magazines. If you go the 92 or 226 route mags would be more and the gun would require a coat of Duracoat and new grips but you should still be able to do everything for what you get for the rifle. You will have a great gun that looks great and still have a rifle.
Atleast that's what I would do. Then save up a few hundred for a 22lr rifle and handgun for cheap range time, you can always use more cheap shooting.

I have learned if you sell a gun to buy another you will regret it at some point. I would save little by little and sell some of your stuff you dont really need(if you have any). Hell if I were you I would survive off of ramen for a month to get a good pistol.

It's not that I want to sell either at this point but I am literally in the negative in my bank account. I had just moved (enough to pay bills) and both rifles see little use and I don't have time to shoot them so I figured I would try to get some money out of them but I don't want to be completely defenseless so I thought I could get something like a springfield XD or a Glock and still have 900-1000 left in cash until I can secure income (just got laid off again). It sounds like everyones saying get rid of the VZ. I love the VZ as it's one of the most accurate comfortable firearms I've ever shot but it's also my most expensive at this point, the AK47 I have i've never shot but I could probably get 500 or more out of it I suppose, the AK buying boom isn't really there like it was during elections.

Also there are the TT-33, CZ-82, Polish P64, and Nagant revolver as low-cost handgun options. Again, not necessary recommending these as a long-term solution to your sidearm needs, but they will "bridge the gap" until you can climb to a better spot financially. You can look them up @ www.jgsales.com

Sell my rifles and get a handgun?

You seem to be a little hesitant because of past bad experiences with sales, so before you sell try to find somebody you can do a trade with.

Try looking in the classifieds on this board for somebody in your state that has something you’re interested in or at the very least find a shop who will trade even up.

Me - I'd keep both and keep a baseball bat & machete nearby until I could save up enough for a handgun. But if I had to chose, I'd ditch the Romanian. There are plenty of affordable handguns for what you can get for the AK.

If you ditch the Czech you will regret it.

Every man in america needs a rifle a shotgun and 2 handguns. thats my personal opinion.

As far as a SHTF seeming unlikely... ok. Whatever you think, but the last few years have been telling me a different story.

Keep the AKs, get a night job, buy a nice handgun.
