I'm wanting to test the waters and offer a trade on a pistol in my safe for one of lesser value plus cash. I'm curious as to how to best do it.

Is it best, in the ad, to leave dollar figures off - i.e., "I have gun X and want to trade for gun Y plus cash" - and be prepared to negotiate; or state the estimated values of the guns plus the amount of cash I hope to receive - i.e., "I have gun x, worth $500, and am looking for gun y plus $200"?

I've done outright sales before but never a trade request for a specific firearm.

Thanks,
Q

I would simply state what you want in cash for your gun and then indicate you would be willing to take a specific type gun in trade as part of the sales transaction.

I would likely say I have X to trade for Y plus specific amount of cash or best offer will be considered.

"I have gun X and want to trade for gun Y plus cash"
That is about as direct and honest as you can be.
Ps. what are you thinking of selling?

Oldbear, Mrs. Q & I have been doing Dave Ramsey. Realized I'm asset-rich and debt-heavy. So, downsizing to pay down debt. Selling or trading off stuff that can be replaced later. Keeping basics and classics like old Smith revolvers.

WTT Springfield Loaded 1911 for 3" SP101 plus cash (posted in trading post)

Also, have Ruger LCR that will be going on chopping block if a buddy doesn't take it.

Unless you really NEED the trade gun, just sell for cash and be done with it. You'll probably wind up getting more buck for your bang that way.
