sellier and bellot 30-06 180 grain hpc

I do not have experience of this S&B cartridge but have used S&B ammo in 8x57 and 6.5x55 in the past and still have a fair few boxes of 8x57. I have found the ammo good and the brass perfectly reloadable.

IMO, they expand way too well! While these aerodynamical hunting bullets fly great, and improved flight over very long distances. I have come over the years to really not like them. This all comes from self butchering and seeing the severely destructive results they cause. This one even lists "Dramatic expansion" and I used SST's and if they hit the shoulder they ruined all meat with in a 3" diameter or so. I have thrown complete shoulders out in the woods for the critters to reclaim from the destruction and the loss of bullet weight I was not sure how much lead dust could be in the meat. Put it through the ribs and it is fine, but touch much muscle and your ruining a lot of meat. I also seen a lot more people complaining of this with straight wall cartridges being allowed in shotgun counties. Guys using 350 Legend and getting the same destruction if they hit a shoulder.

I went back to soft point bullets before switching to cast. I had deer DRT and run 60 yards with Core-lokts and had the same results with SST's. Just the latter really destroyed a few shoulders. Just my opinion from my experiences.

how was penetration? did they exit?

i feel ya on the meat loss.

Exit on rib shots. I use the SST on a last day doe one time. I had a 2" opening between trees and from her head position I thought I would hit right behind the front leg. I actually leg bone above the elbow and destroyed that shoulder that I tossed it out. Bullet came of or the shoulder and entered the heart and exploded the back side of the heart like an open flower. I could not find the round in the lung cavity and just felt a few slivers. After the trama below she still ran 50 yards before I heard her crash!! You'd think this kind of energy transfer would be DRT, but nope.

I wonder if those will be available as components? I use 150gr Bronze Points in my 30-06 and really like them. These would be nice in either a 150 or 180 grain 308 loading as well, I'd think.

It is always quite puzzling that a deer, so easy to kill can run with that time of trauma. I've seen them run 200 yards easily after a clean heart shot. Afterwards I always try to make lungs shots and make sure that the bullets exits both side incase I have to track it.

That's too bad. A pressure cooked deer heart makes for some fine eating.

I watched a YT on a guy from Alaska covering the SST and other non bonded, dramatic expansion, bullets and he was stating he thought they were bad for hunting. He said ballistic superior, but expand and kill best at long range. Short range they explode and disintegrate. Hunting out east most shots are under 100 yards and I noticed the latter also and why I stopped using them. He was stating they destroy a lot of meat and that is what i noticed also.
