First most important question: which state are you in?

Is your friend in the same state?

Depends on the laws in your state. However, if your friend doesn't live in the same state you do, you need to ship it to a FFL, or federal firearms licensee in your friend's area.

Assuming you're doing this face to face, again, depending on your state's laws, it might just be a quick, simple thing. Friend gives you money, you give your friend the gun.

Some states require that the purchaser in a situation like this be at least 21 for a handgun, others don't. Another poster will probably chime in with some links to state laws for you.

As far as I am aware, in Texas you can just hand him the gun and he can hand you the cash and you're done. No background checks, no forms, no anything (but the buyer must be at least 18).

You can visit here to find the state laws pertaining to firearms in Texas. Some of them are funny. The link is a little out of date, some important new things have been added, but they don't really apply to face to face sales.

Yes, a private party transfer among 2 Texas residents is perfectly legal. You give him gun, he gives you money, life is good.

Yet another reason Texas ROCKS!!!
