I live in Florida and was wondering how do i go about selling my AK to a friend of mine. What kind of paperwork should I use to sell it? Is it legal for me to sell it without transfering it to him on some way?
I have never sold one of my rifles or pistols before and i am not sure on how to go about doing it. Can anyone give some advice?

Thanks,
Tony

I would still write up a bill of sale

Because you never know. I'm not saying that your friend would do anything illegal with it but he may sell it some day, and then who knows. It is always nice to have proof of sale.

"You can hand it to him, shake hands, and go on your way.
Steve"

Only if the friend is a resident of the State of Florida and the transaction occurs within the state.

I would document the transfer by having the receiving party sign a dated receipt with description of weapon and serial number that you keep and you sign a receipt for whatever funds you receive and give that to the friend. Documentation, even among friends is good to have, like DogBonz said, in case the weapon gets stolen later or whatever and ends up in the wrong hands.

For your protection, I would recommend a bill of sale/receipt. A copy of it might help him in the event of a loss for insurance purposes.

But, as long as you both live in the same state and you know he is not prohibited from owning firearms, it's quite simple. He gives you the funds, You give him the rifle. That's how I bought my MAK-90 from a guy I know around here- nice, simple, and quick.

Assuming you are both residents of Florida:

Type up a piece of the paper that says something like the following:

_________ hereby purchases said weapon a __________ from __________ for the amount of ____________. The seller was assured by the purchaser, That the purchaser was legally allowed to own firearms in accordance with federal law.

Signed,

Seller: ______________
Purchaser:____________

edit: DON'T FORGET SERIAL NUMBER

Then get the form notarized.

Prince Yamato has said it the best. While you can sell it like any other object assuming he is a resident of the same state, always CYA when it comes to firearms. Write it up on some loose leaf paper, and get it notarized. Many notaries don't even charge for their service.
