Hey pals. So, I have a bug in my bonnet to acquire a .22-250 Remington again. I'm curious about semi-auto offerings circa 2017.

  • Wasn't the Browning BAR made in said chambering at some point? If so, is it any good? If it is, the traditional styling would make this my first choice.
  • With the glut of AR-15/10 rifles (and complete uppers) out there, in nearly every conceivable chambering, is there a good one in .22-250?
Thanks!

P.S. I see Olympic Arms made an AR in said. No thanks to anything they put out ... and I'll leave it at that.

Sounds like barrel torture. That barrel would heat up FAST.

Maybe .204 Ruger would fit your purpose better? .204 Ruger has a plus: So little recoil, you can see the bullet hit through the scope.

Caught me flat footed. You usually don't see a request for Semi Auto 22-250 because it is kind of a "osok" type round (high energy and accurate). And heats up barrels quicker.
I know you specified 22-250, but I would add that a 50 gr. Vmax out of a 20-22" 223 would get you close enough to 22-250 performance, with a PLETHORA of options and cheap ammo.
I once shot a coon with my 22" Ruger 223 (forgot the load but probably a warm 50gr. load) and killed that coon and the one standing behind. Lots of energy.
Now 22-250 is a FINE round, and circa 2001 there were SO many nice choices in bolt guns (kimber varmint, Tikka stainless etc.) but my dad always preferred 223 over 22-250 for coyotes. He said that 223 would keep em down on the ground better. I don't know why, but experience is experience.

Thanks guys for the notes. Random thoughts ...

  • Regarding .223 Rem. / 5.56mm: got plenty already, in various forms, thanks.
  • No interest in any bolt-gun of any kind, in any caliber, from any manufacturer. In the collection there are, literally, no bolt-actions in said after I sold the last earlier in the year. Not knocking them, but they just do nothing for me and I'm not investing in a new one. Hence the semi-auto specification. No, I am not thinking of "mag dumps" in .22-250, so a 4-5 shot semi-auto like a BAR would fit the bill. If they work, of course.
  • Varmint hunting, 'yotes specifically, is why I messed with this cartridge 25-ish years ago.
  • .204 Ruger: hmmm ... interesting. Very interesting. I suppose I should do some research on this new fangled option.
Thanks again. :)

There is a blr in 22-250, but for a semiautomatic choice, I'm thinking you're gonna haveta do some customizing, find a semi auto receiver that'll chamber a 6.5cm/.260/.243/.308 (ar10, bar but browning is a pain, etc) get a barrel chambered for 22-250 get a Smith to mate it up to your receiver, unless you're confident in yourself, and presto!
ETA, maybe you could slap a barrel on this

I think rebarreling those is a lot of trouble, too.
Maybe a Remington, those have been caliber converted.
The reliability issues that I hear SO much about on the rem woodmaster models is why I didn't reference one, however, if you've got the confidence in them, then by all means, continue and please share your results as this is a very intriguing idea! I also found h&r ultra, Springfield, and browning short tracs that should work.

There were some AR's made in .204 and the WSSM's.

If you want something exotic, get ahold of Mike at Dedicated Technologies in Minnesota. He made .358 WSSM's for deer hunting for my friend and me. They both shoot sub 1/2". He makes all kinds of exotic stuff, or chambers ARs in unusual factory calibers
