What are some good semi auto Hunting .308 rifles? The specs are it has to be under $1,000 with everything except the magazines and glass.

Browning BAR or converted saiga, Remington 750, maybe a fal? But I want it as light as I can get it. Also tell me how accurate they are.

Hmmm, the distance is as far as I can get a clean kill so like 300 yards for most shooting and then toying around with longer ranges for fun/ targets.

What distances are you hunting? I love the BAR's, but they are not the most accurate rifles. If you find an ammo it likes 1.5-2" groups at 100 yards seems to be about normal. The one I have loves Federal Fusions, but anything else I've tried shoots like crap. I get about 1.5-2" groups with the Fusions and about 3-3.5" with the Federal Power Shoks, Winchester Power Points, etc. I tried the Winchester ballistic tips and Remington Core Lokts and got 6-8" groups. It's for sure not an accurate gun, but once I found ammo it liked it's good enough to hunt with.

I've read reports of guys claiming to get sub moa accuracy out of them, but I've read a ton more reports of guys claiming 2-3" groups from theirs so I wouldn't expect much better than that.
 
My dad has had a Browning auto in 308 for as long as I can remember (which is at least 10 years) and he has gotten 300yd kills with it multiple times. I would go with that if I were you. No idea how much it would cost or anything, but you might find one on budsgunshop.com for cheap. They have the best price on a lot of guns I look at.

Btw, I might just be too tired and that's why I find this funny, but the op is asking about .308 rifles and the time stamp on the op is 3:08....
 
DPMS Oracle or Sportical (7.62mm versions). It'll do you a hellava lot better than some commie saiga. You can still get in one for under a grand if you look hard enough. RRA LAR-8 is close, as is the DPMS LR-308T. If a grand is your mark, buy American for the love of Mike!

The BAR is FINE weapon, but a shorter, lighter more compact package will pay you bigger dividends in the woods, and the AR platform is more accurate IME. I'm a Browning guy, but when it comes to an autoloading rifle, the AR is king. As far as accuracy, an AR will get you inside an inch with good glass (the RRA trigger won't hurt). Reload, and you'll be shooting 3/4 - 1/2" clover leaves all day.
 
My uncle has a BAR Safari II in .338 Winchester Mag that I've seen group sub-MOA from 200 yards with cheap gray box Winchester Power Points, but it had a BOSS and required some tuning to get it that way.
 
I have BAR's in 30-06 and .270, fine hunting rifles with around 1.25-1.5 MOA accruacy. Not match rifles but good enough, and lighter by the way than any AR10 I have held.

However my absolute favorite is the HK SLB 2000K carbine in 30-06. If you can find one used they usually run around $7-800 and just can't be beat for a hunting rifle. Mine is sub MOA every day with any 150 gr. factory load (even the cheap Remington), with the Hornady factory 150 SST load it shoots around .6-.7" every time. Spare mags are very expensive when you can find them, but mine came with 2, 5 and 10 round mags so I have not bought any others.

And the other good point is you will be the only guy in the deer camp with one, every time.
 
My dad has a BAR in 30.06 and at 200 yards, it will consistently shoot 1.5 to 2 inch groups with the BTSP's that he was using I think they were Federal Game Kings or Match Kings...I don't exactly remember which. That was last fall when we shot it; he's had it for years and he's dropped a number of Whitetails at 250 to 300 yards. Then again I've seen him drop deer twice at over 200 yards with his A5 Auto 16 gauge also. The guy's deadlier than cancer with a Browning in his hands.
 
I actually have a Remington 7400 in 30.06 and it's minute of deer almost everytime I shoot at one. I've only missed twice with this gun in the 20+ years I've owned it. It's not a target rifle by any means, but it will consistently shoot 1 to 1-1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with the 165 grain Federal BTSP's. I found that when I dropped to 150's it really spread the groups out. 180 grains rounds hold a pretty good group, but they've been hard to find lately and they don't shoot quite as flat as the 165 grain rounds plus the 180's were resulting in too much meat damage.
 
I'd agree with the LeverGunJunkie and say that a AR style would suit you well. Very light. The DPMS Sportical is pretty nice, it drops the forward assist, brass deflector, and the dust cover. I perfer Rock River Arms though. My personal preference :)
 
If you want a super accurate AR 10 rifle, get a stock one and put a Noveske barrel on it. You will not be disappointed. It will run you an extra $560 for the barrel though. Accuracy costs.
