semi jacketed hollowpoints

just picked up a box of .357 125gr. remington SEMIjacketed hollowpoints. how do they compare to full jacketed hollowpoints? they look like they might expand better. should i expect some leading? thanks. joe

I'm not sure what they are. Did you buy a box of loaded ammo or just a box of Remington semi-jacketed bullets? If they are like the semi-jacketed (half-jacketed) Speer bullets I've used, the jacket is all the way up the shank of the bullet and only that portion of the bullet touches the bore of your gun. If that's the case, I doubt you'll get any leading at all. I've always thought they would expand better than a regular JHPs because they have all that soft lead exposed up front. That's just my guess though.

Here's a Winchester 158g SJHP after firing through just shy of 5 phonebooks, +p load. It tumbled and was on it's side about 6 pages from the back cover of the 5th book.

The Remington 357 125gr SJHP has a good rep for expansion because it's loaded hot as hell. Most of the others (notably Winchester) ain't loaded near as hot.

Most of the SJHP designs I've seen have a smallish hollowpoint cavity and need some serious velocity (1,400fps+) to work. Which is also why I wouldn't trust a 158grain version out of anything this side of a 16" rifle barrel or very close to it (like the silly 12" barrel Taurus revolver).

If that bullet penetrated FIVE telephone books (of WHAT thickness?) then it looks like quite a penetrator and that's what gets the damage done to the vitals. On the other hand, there's a lot of information left out that could be pertinent.

Interesting and relevant to the ongoing quest for good .32 Mag defense loads. I had assumed the Georgia Arms 100 gr SJHP was likely to give expansion from a short barrel as long as it reached 1000 fps or so, which is feasible, at least seemingly so, since the round is rated at 1100 fps.

But 1400 sounds very hard to obtain with the usual 85 -100 gr bullets, except maybe with a hot-rodded load from a longer-barrelled gun like the adjustable-sighted .32 Single Sixes Ruger used to make, or Freedom Arms' .32 Mag/.32-20 single action revolver.

one of my favourite .357 loads. The semi-JHPs, which I think were also called scalloped hollowpoints have exposed lead that looks more like an upside down flower. One of the effects of this design is that the JHP expands and the "petals" tend to break off and become secondary projectiles. I have some pics somewhere of recovered bullets.

Between this and their warmness, I think the penetration is a bit limited, making it a good SD or LEO round.

One opinion held with these very fast lighter bullets is that flame erosion of revo top strap can occur more rapidly plus - they are harder on the forcing cone. I daresay in moderate quantities not a problem but - large diet, then perhaps.

Color me old fashioned (I am!) but I still favor good ol' 158's - if you can get 'em .. mine come from cast gascheck swc's in handloads.

Through a 4" barrel, they usually lose around 30-40% of their weight. Expanded diameter is around .55". Penetration 9-10" or so in calibrated ballistics gel. Kicks like an enraged buffalo out of a 2" SP-101. Not sure how it does through the 2.25" barrel. I'd recommend 145 gr Silvertips, 125 gr Gold Dot, 125 gr Golden Sabers, or 180 gr Partition Gold over it.

Buck Snort, I can get just about any info when I get back home. Out of town till the end of the week. What I can tell you now is that I used Unique, 5 yards, Federal nickle +p cases, Remington primers (1 1/2 spp), S&W Model 10-7 3" barrel, phone books soaked in water for a couple hours prior to test. Going to try XPT 158g next, hehehehehe.....

I'll get the average thickness of the phonebooks (all are very close to the same thickness) and exact amount of Unique when I get back, anything else?
