SENATE STAFFER BUSTED FOR CARRYING WEBB'S LOADED GUN: Phillip Thompson, executive assistant to Senator James Webb (D-VA ), has been arrested by Capitol Hill Police on Monday for 'inadvertently' holding the senator's loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security at the Russell Senate Office building while the Senator was parking his car. Thompson was booked for carrying a pistol without a license (CPWL) and for possessing unregistered ammunition. According to congressional rules, congressmen and senators, not staff, are allowed to have a gun on federal property. Developing...

"Aren't guns illegal in DC?"

Not for our Lords & Masters.

On your knees, worker peasant! Your Master is passing by!

Wow... Hypocrisy, anyone?

I actually hope Webb pulls some strings for his boy, and hopefully the VA members of this board can hound him to do something about the retarded gun laws in DC, and anything falling under Fed jurisdiction.

Now, doesn't Congress have the ultimate say on what goes on in DC?

I wonder if intent is an element in the crime--in other words, if Webb simply gave him the bag, and didn't tell him the gun was inside, can he still be convicted?

Given that we're talking about DC, I would guess that he could be.

Wow! Congresscritters get to carry weapons into the US Capitol. I wonder if they also get a free pass allowing them to carry throughout DC?

I guess that "what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander".

At least it was a liberal Democrat that got caught. Imagine the media uproar if it had been a Republican.:what: We'd have heard a week of outrage and Rosie.:cuss: Since it was a liberal, it just a misunderstanding.

hmmmm...

Webb gave him the bag probably knowing that the gun was inside, and that the unknowing aid would be busted for it. Federal charges against Webb for conspiracy of/to something? (yeah, it's way outside reality, but speculation is free)

This line is gone now from Drudge. Is it a conspiracy?!?!?!??!?!!111  :what:

Bank on it, Webb will get all this buried and his buddy will get off with a slap. Now, if it was one of us, we would have been treated like Osama himself had come thru the door.

This will add fuel to our cause... When commoners learn it is okay for politicos' to carry, but DC commoners aren't allowed to, maybe they will start asking more questions... Stoke the flames I say!

"How does the senator vote in regards to gun legislation?"

AFAIK Webb is brand-new to political service, and is generally regarded as a pro-gun Democrat.

I have a feeling he is pro-gun, I have certainly not seen a 'liberal Democrat' write several times how right the Vietnam war was (he is a Marine Corps Vietnam vet) before Webb, so he breaks the mold a bit.

Still don't see it, although now they have a statement from Webb's communications director calling it "an oversight by the staffer." Poor guy, sounds like they may blame him instead of letting the senator stand up and take responsibility. I hope he's got the guts to put his job on the line.

I mean, it's not like he was DUI and crashed his car, so he should be fine, right?
