Hi!
I just read your site. A small tidbit, about the link "John Lott Thinks Teachers Should Pack Handguns at School": Israel has very tight gun control laws with only about 4% of the population having gun licenses. Most of these people are allowed to own only a single handgun. Yet it's legal for teachers who legally own guns to carry them to work, and it's obligatory for any school, public or private, to have an armed guard at the entrance. Why? Because we had several school shootings in this country, in the 80's IIRC, so we created this program to prevent further shootings. When a class goes on a trip, we issue two or three adults (parents or teachers) coming along with rifles. Works like a charm. The only shooting attack on a school or class trip in the last 13 years was on a trip to Jordan, and the Jordanians didn't let the rifles accross the border. So yeah, teachers carrying guns in school is an absolutely marvellous idea. Oh, and if you think your kids' teacher is a the kind of guys who would freak out and attack them, why do you let him near your kids in the first place?

Well said. But its been my experience that anti's don't respond well to reality. Let us know if you get a reply.

Good letter....I've thought for some time now that allowing a few well-trained teachers to carry in school would be a good preventative measure against someone just walking into the building and pulling another Columbine.

I teach in what might be described as an old suburb creeping to urban near DC. Whenever something happens like 9/11 or the snipers, we get very vigilant and go into "lockdown". What these guys at my school don't get, is that because the building is open end to end when we are not in lockdown we're just begging to be a target.

My room is on the ground floor at the back of the building with windows. Oh, on top of that it's near an unlocked exit door......

We have armed "resource officers" on campus, but it's a big building.....

Kudos to the author.

BTW, Microbalrog, the commonality of class between "blissninny" and "leftist" extends only to such extent that the leftist expects government to solve all our problems for us. The pro-freedom aspects of the left are definitely to be appreciated.

MicroB - I give you 5 more years max to remain a leftist. Soon, you too will be a conservative (with a soft heart).
And a couple years after that, he'll get enlightened and become a libertarian. ;)

MicroB- Goodonya for writing letters and confronting anti's with their irrational views. Let us know if you get a reply, it would make for an interesting or amusing read, I'm sure.

I agree heartily with what Norton said. I do social work with middle school kids (not fluffy, huggy liberal social work...more like care about the kids but ultimately let's keep them out of prison and off welfare social work :) ) and if I could carry at school I would in a heartbeat. I've just been transferred to a new school for the upcoming school year but the school that I was working at before is pretty close to the ghetto and we've had several cases in which there were armed men very near and "lockdown" was initiated. In one case two men had been murdered in broad daylight two blocks away. In another case there was a wanted and visibly armed man running around outside on campus. Luckily we were able to get locked down before he tried to get inside but he could have easily done so had he been a bit more stealthy.

Anyway...Utah is somewhat on the right track. Let the teachers be armed and let it be their own business if they are.
