A buddy just bought a PGO Model 500 and in a classic case of one-ups-manship I was looking into the Serbu. I had seen them on the forum and always thought they were "kinda neat."

Until I saw the price...

I can't help but think that $700 would go a long way on my first AR, but it wouldn't be a horrible problem if I ended up with both. :)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, only $5 NFA tax on AOW weapons. Transfer fees will cost $50 or more. Local, state, and federal taxes will also cost some $. Total purchase you're looking at around to $800.

I still think they're sweet guns. You can try finding a factory-made Mossberg 590 14" AOW for cheaper, like around $450-500 or so.

My understanding is an AOW can not legally be made into a SBS (and even if it could, it would cost you an additional $200).

Sure it can - you just pay the tax, as you said.

I always thought it would be neat to have one from a "have one of everything" standpoint. $700 was out as its just a cut down $215 shotgun, I said to myself. I had two NIB 870's in the safe won in a raffle also.
My dealer had a super shorty he let me measure so I could make an exact copy as well.

The deal breaker was the $5 tax on an AOW is only for a transfer. If you form 1 an AOW it still costs the full $200. Not like $200 is the end of the world but I didn't think I would have as much fun with is as I do with my other NFA firearms.

Is it "worth" $700? Well, what something is worth depends on what someone is willing to pay for it. Are you willing to pay $700 for a two shot AOW, pistol gripped shotgun? It's impractical, but might be fun. Might. I imagine recoil would beat you up after a few shots.

If you have the kind of disposable income every month to be able to afford $700 toys, and you want this, then I'd say - go for it! If you want something that could be used practically if the situation calls for it, I'd say choose something else.

I get mixed responses on that. Some say any short shotgun is a $200 stamp, but I had two guys who work at two different gun stores tell me I could cut down my coach gun beyond 18" and it'd only take a $5 stamp.

It's only $5 to transfer an AOW (which is the category the S³ falls into) if an NFA manufacturer makes it.

If you (an unlicensed person) make an NFA weapon, you'll have to pay a $200 manufacturing tax.

+1 about that.
Y'know...."worth" is a dangerous word, kinda like "need".
For me....$700 for a gun that has extremely limited use? No.
But....YMMV.....it might be fun....probably is.....lot of money, though, to hear a gun go bang which is mostly what you'd be doing.

Typical from people I have seen working at most gun stores, they don't know what they are talking about. Too much hearsay and gun magizines cluttering the mind.

304-616-4500 is the number to the NFA branch of the BATFE. They are who I talk to reguarding NFA firearms or modifications.

Yeah, it would. Like from recoil pad to flash hider on a Spikes m4gery.

I've seen them at the range, and I'll admit they look like fun.
Practical? Not so much.

I have two Mossberg 500's and together they didn't cost near $700.
Would I like one? Yeah, do I want to get a ATF stamp? No.

I think if you defended your life using one, the jury would see you as some kind of wild man from Miami Vice.

Would it one-up your friend............You bet!!!

The extra 200 bucks would be the deal breaker. From what I read on Serbu's sight I thought I was just dealing with $5 extra.

Would be cool, but the idea of spending a grand for a Mossberg kinda bums me out...

From them is is only $5 on a form 4. If you want to form 1 one from a $200 shot gun it costs $200 for the stamp.

So it would be $200 shotgun + $200 stamp + time and metal on a F1...or $700 +$5 on a F4.

Make your own pay the 200 for the stamp a gun will probably cost 250 for an 870
then you can make it any way you want total cost around 500-600
