At home, posting on THR instead of working.
I have handled and used a 154CM Al Mar SERE Operator and was pretty impressed. They have recently introduced a S30V bladed model for thier 2003 catalogue. Can anyone tell me how does S30V compare to 154CM in the following categories?

1)Corrosion resistance
2)Edge holding
3)Tensile strength

Would it be worth the $$$ to upgrade to a S30V operator?

IMHO, I would absolutely go for the S30V. They make hammers out of it. CM and ATS are good for silverware (please forgive).

Tensile strength isn't relevant in a knife so you won't have to worry about it.

S30V corrosion resistance is comparable to the others (i.e. they'll all rust if left in salt water and not rinsed off).

Edge holding is excellent, but the others are very good as well.

Is the extra cost worthwile? Perhaps, but the $$ difference could be invested in a good sharpener that you can carry.

I'm impressed with all three steels mentioned and have many folders made of each steel.

I don't notice much difference between them myself. They are all "good to go".

Any of the three would make good choices. As HSO has stated, I'd suggest getting ats or 154 and put the rest into a good sharpening system to maintain it.

As well, there are websites out there which show the differences in steels mentioned and one could certainly choose one themselves based on data which would be suitable for the intended application of same.
