Greetings all,

I'm looking to get a bunch of people together at the Chabot Gun Club on Saturday the 17th of December. I would have just picked up my semi-auto Browning 1919, and want to take it for a spin to celebrate (among other guns, of course).

I'll be bringing a few (maybe 2-5 people, some new shooters) people along. I'm not sure if they have a BBQ pit or anything, but it'd be fun to grill some burgers, hot dogs, and/or chicken after we shoot.

Anyone else interested?

I'd love to go but the traveling motorcycle show and exposition is at the San Jose convention center, as part of its trip around the country during the winter, and I have already planned to go there with a bunch of friends.

Say hi to my friends John and Linda (rangemaster & asst. rangemaster) from Roy in MN (former RSO). Ah, I can still hear the cease-fire/target change script ringing in my ears. :) "... Is the rifle line clear? Thank you. Is the pistol line clear? Thank you. You may resume firing!" Good times!

Keep an eye on the newbies, and enlist the help of the RSOs. We were usually pretty good about being helpful without being too overbearing. (Depended on the individual RSO and the customer.) Have a good time, Pete (& company).

I'll see if I can make it, been needin' to put some rounds through my rifle. I can't recall if they have a BBQ pit....but I'd guess if there isn't one at the range there are some in the park the range inhabits.

All right, here's the scoop:

1) They know a bunch of us are going to come (I'm trying to get folks from a few other forums, as well as from my college rifle club).
2) They have no BBQ pit. Anyone here got a pickup truck and BBQ they can bring? Charcoal or propane's fine...just let me know and I'll let folks to know to bring an extra dollar or two to contribute.
3) What should we eat?

It'd be nice to get a confirmed count of how many people are going to be there. Either RSVP here, or to [email protected] both!

Ok folks, I've managed to arrange for an old Weber charcoal-burning BBQ, as Chabot doesn't have any BBQ pits. Again, I'll try to bring some meat and sodas, but it would be best if everyone was able to bring their own food and drinks, and then everyone cooks food on the grill. The grill's not that big, but it'll do.

For those on the Peninsula within a few miles of San Mateo/Burlingame, it might be handy to meet at my house (email me - [email protected] for the address) and carpool over there. Those further away would probably be best driving there themselves and meeting everyone else. Directions to Chabot are available from their website. Note that MapQuest and other internet map/direction sites are not able to accurately give you directions there.

I'm busy linking up ammo for the M1919, and will have a ton of .308 on IMI and USGI links. I don't mind folks shooting a bit on the 1919, but I'm sort of on a shoestring budget, so forgive me if excess ammo consumption is discouraged. If you want to link up and fire some of your own .308, I'll have the linker and extra links there.

Although the range opens at 9am on Saturday, it's doubtful that I'll be there before 10am. I'm not sure when everyone else wants to meet up, but for us folks with a 45-60min drive ahead of them, 9am's a bit too early. :D

See you all there!

just my luck, I'll be out shooting clays with some people from work. remember only 10rnds per link. unless of course you have owned them for a few years.

I happen to have a sizeable amount of old links, so there's some belts that are longer than others. Even the younger ones don't have dates stamped on them. I fear that eventually they'll all get mixed up after a few days of shooting. Grr.

I wish Chabot allowed rapid-fire...otherwise it'd be a lot more fun.

Would you believe that I've never shot clays before, other than standing some up on a berm? I should do that sometime...

I'd like to go but have to go to an IDPA in Winton on the 17th. Maybe next time.

Ok, folks, here's the scoop so far:

* I haven't gotten any requests from people on THR or LiveJournal about getting my address for carpooling. Thus, I can assume that people want to simply meet up at Chabot by taking their own personal vehicles. That's fine.

* Some people I know in person have cancelled, while others said they'll come. No exact count yet, but I would guestimate about 7-10 people will come.

* I'm bringing 15 Ballpark hot dogs and 16 buns (why can't they ever match right?), some ketchup, an old Weber BBQ, and some charcoal. I'll bring some grill utensils as well, but I'm no chef, so I'll just bring basic stuff (flipper thingy, giant-evil-fork-thingy, etc.). Alas, I have no paper plates or plastic utensils, so bring your own or do without!:D If you want food other than one or two hot dogs, I strongly suggest bringing your own food and drinks (I'll bring a few Cokes and Diet Cokes in the cooler) to cook on the BBQ.

* The plan is to meet over there at or about 10am. We'll probably leave from here (San Mateo on the Peninsula) no later than 9:30, and may arrive 10:00-10:15ish. I'm really bad with faces and names, so feel free to introduce yourself, and please don't be offended if I forget your name. I'll be the guy in the gray ARMY t-shirt, probably in need of a shave, with a blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans. I'll probably take up a whole gun rack by myself. Sorry.

* I'm looking to start up the BBQ around 1-2pm'ish, feast for a bit, and then shoot a bit more after we're done so the BBQ can cool down prior to being put back in the truck.
* I headspaced the 1919 tonight, and it's all good to go. You're more than welcome to put a bit through it, but as I'm fairly limited on finances, if you want to shoot more than a small amount and have your own .308, I can set you up with some links for it. I don't mean to be a jerk or anything -- I love letting people use my guns (and using others), but I don't have all that much cash for ammo.
:cuss:

Although there's no cell signal up there, if you need to reach me prior to my arrival, my number is 650-483-0376, and (if the username wasn't enough info), I go by "Pete".

Hope to see you all there!

After Action Report

(Note: I'm really bad with faces and names. As such, I apologize if I don't remember yours. In fact, I've forgotten nearly everyone's except that Bandicoot and Heath from the LiveJournal Guns Community)

Plans were disrupted this morning, as my friend with a pickup was a no-show and my big BBQ broke (welds fell apart). I had my car loaded for bear with the trunk and backseat filled with guns, ammo cans, two coolers, hot dogs, buns, ice, sodas, condiments, and other goodies. Realizing that everyone was counting on us for a BBQ, we stopped at Orchard Supply Hardware and picked up a little Weber "hibachi"-sized grill and my buddy Devin (who was carpooling over with me) brought a bunch of charcoal.

Arriving around 10:45, we met some folks from the last SF Bay Area shoot (which was in Los Altos) who a few of us had introduced to The High Road. Introductions were made, and we spent about ten minutes unloading the car (again, lots of stuff). Already, there was a light drizzle, but nothing I was worried about. It was cold, but not that bad.

After about 45 minutes, the rain started in earnest, the temperatures dropped, and a bit of a wind picked up. More folks arrived, introductions were made, and we all consolidated around lanes 19-25 on the 100yd rifle line. The M1919 got a fair bit of attention, both from folks from here and THR, but also from the RSO ("That is, of course, the semi-auto version...right?", "NO HIP-FIRING ON THE PUBLIC LINE!", and "NO RAPID FIRE ON THE PUBLIC LINE!" were a few of the more prominent [yet never repeated, as we were obedient] quotations from the RSO...oh, and "Oooh! Can I try?") and passers-by. Other weapons presents were an M1A, a few .223 and .308 bolt action rifles, a Mini-14, a variety from my collection (Yugo SKS, Kel-Tec SU-16B, Mosin 91/30, M1 Garand, etc.), a couple 10/22s, and several others. Much gun-promiscuity was had by all, as we all tried out everyone else's guns.

Around 1:00pm, we all were cold, wet, and hungry, so we left all the guns open and unloaded for the RSO, assemebed (incorrectly a few times, finally getting it right) the mini-grill, and moved all the cooking stuff over to the gazeebo they have for smokers (which was thankfully empty of smokers). After several failed attempts to ignite the charcoal, it was finally started, warmth was generated, and after sufficient time elapsed we cooked brockwurst, Ballpark hot dogs, and hamburgers. Chips, soda, and other tasty stuff were consumed in abundance. Much socializing, chatting, and so forth occured during this time period as well, as we were far enough from the firing line to stand comfortably about without hearing protection.

After lunch, we all went back to the lines, shot for another hour or so, and finally called it quits around 4:00pm when it just got too cold and wet for the us to stand anymore. We packed everything up, and came back home.

It was a very fun and productive day, but evidently driving rain can start rusting guns VERY quickly. I sprayed down a few of the guns with RemOil in an aerosol can (sadly, the Mosin was shooting corrosive ammo that day), but there were still small rust spots on the Mosin, M1 Garand, and SKS by the time I got them home. Devin (and later my friend Ross, who came to the house to hang out) and I then spent the next hour or two wiping dry all the ammo cans, gun cases, guns, and other supplies as well as disassembling, cleaning, oiling, and reassembling all the guns. Even ones that were barely fired like the 10/22, SKS, and M1 Garand needed to be totally stripped and oiled inside and out due to the driving rain getting all over things. I didn't want any of them to rust, so we took the prudent precaution of cleaning and lightly oiling everything.

Below the cut are pictures and some movies. It seems I brought the only camera, and I was keen on getting pictures of the M1919, so most of them are of it. Sorry...my camera, my rules. :) Also note how the range is in a bit of a valley formed by trees on both sides of it...very Jurassic Park-ish. A few of us were speculating on the odds of a T-Rex stomping down the valley towards us, and wondering if they'd let us rapid-fire on him if it occured. (Yes, we're that geeky.) Note how nearly everyone is demonstrating some example of "It's freakin' cold!" -- the weatherman suggested we'd get rain and cold weather in the evening, not in the morning and afternoon, so few of us brought waterproof clothes, gloves, etc. Also note the delicious food...and me with a hot-dog, both with poking and non-poking action!

Movies:
Bandicoot shooting the M1919
Heath hip-firing the M1919 (the voice at the end is the RSO starting to yell over the loudspeaker not to hip-fire).
Heath on the Kel-Tec while Bandicoot shoots the M1919.

All in all, it was a fun day, much fun was had, and it was a success, even with the rain. Next time we have a get-together, I'll bring the BBQ again (this time with lighter fluid!). I shall designate it the Official Shooty Outing BBQ for all such events around here.

Pete,

Thanks for taking the time to bring the goodies (food & guns). Also, thanks for letting us shoot the 1919. Yea, it was cold, rainy, and windy at the end. I got there about an hour before the others, and left after lunch (how many THR members does it take to light charcoal:uhoh:?). I punished my shoulder with a .30-06, then frighten'ed the target with my mini 14. Wiped everything down as soon as I got home. Looking forward to the next get together, just hope its a little warmer.

best, RG

That's a crime, having to shoot that 1919 so slow. If I rapid-fired it, would they kick me out, or you too? If it were just me, I wouldn't care. :)
