SF Police Outgunned?

The subject of the KTVU news teaser is whether da bad dudes are better armed than the local LEOs. Several shots of what appear to be full auto arms, etc.

Just can't wait to see whether there is a bias ( :scrutiny:) in the report. Maybe something to the effect that SF is being overrun with heavily armed criminal SWAT-like teams?

Who knows, some of the local news people are fair, some have active imaginations, some like to sell to paranoia. The full spectrum. In any event discussion of firearms in this area is always exciting.

Nah, they're handling it just exactly the right way - getting court injunctions against individuals identified as belonging to street gangs from going into certain neighborhoods and from assembly. It's evidently the hot new tactic.:scrutiny:

Let's see - you already have laws against murder, assault, robbery, theft, and vandalism... these guys are committing murder, assault, robbery, theft, vandalism... what a great idea to also tell them that they can't come to your neighborhood. That'll show 'em!

I'm also interested in that KTVU spot. Did it say when it would air? Friday night it sounds like?

Come on people, it is SF, the place that voted by popular vote of the people to outlaw possession and sales of handguns. Fortunately for the minority there the CA DOJ wants full control over firearm sales and "gun control" so it didn't stand. (The irony that gun control laws giving more power to the state resulted in undoing stricter local gun control is just funny and shows the situation of CA gun owners.)

You can bet the report is going to highlight criminals getting powerful arms, show full auto in use alluding to its use by criminals, give comments that allude that with tougher laws such weapons would be less common, and show that police need more powerful firearms.

The conclusion they want the viewer to reach is going to be "firearm laws too lax, police need better budgets and more powerful weapons to keep us safe, and something must be done and soon for we are all in immediate peril."

SF has already shown it does not like guns, would ban them if it was its own seperate entity, and the news is going to aim for ratings and respectability in the area by catering to that consensus. News is a business.

Haven't police always been outgunned? Bonnie & Clyde, Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson... aren't they all reputed to have been machine gun users? Isn't this part of the reason for '34 NFA?

ETA: I bet the news "story" mentions shooting from the hip. They get bonus points for the phrase "bullet hose."

Couldn't happen, that's illegal in SF. Someone needs to tell these criminals.

I suggest a parade with floats decorated to show how guns are illegal......

I'm stuck at work and can't view it. Hopefully it's gonna be replayed so I can write to them and tell them how wrong they are.

By the way, Zoogster, don't be too hasty to describe the whole city based on about 9% of the population... that "vote" happened during a special election that many Californians were upset about (wasting money for no good reason, thanks to the Governator). Many decided to boycott the vote (right or not, that's what happened), and many didn't know that the particular law was on the ballot (again, right or not, it happened).

Many of us that live just south of SF were emailing everyone we could think of to get the word out, but the truth was that it was just not reported in the usual media (big surprise). The total turnout for the election was something like 15%, and the split Yes/No for that measure was something like 49%/51%. So an extremely small minority actually voted FOR the ban.

Many people were literally caught by surprise and realized that they need to be more vigilant. Heck, I don't even live there (I've never liked SF very much), but I was up on their politics.

Officer Issac Espinoza was gunned down by a culprit who used a full automatic (and not a semi-automatic civilian look-a-like that is banned in California) AK-47. Years before that, Officer James Guelff was gunned down by a car-jacker who shot him with a Steyr-Aug semi-auto rifle. Yep, I think they are outgunned and there should be a AR-15 in every car.

This prolly another propaganda piece to get AR-15 type rifles (or an equivalent) into every squad car in SF.

Every now and then you get a media story about SF officers whining they are outgunned and Chief Fong will not allow them to carry AR-15s or equivalent.

So far Fong and the City Supervisors have not budged on the AR-15 issue.

I believe San Fran has a well equipped SWAT/ERT team.

If ANY LE dept. is outgunned it is because they or their superiors CHOOSE to be! They cannot control what the bad guys use but they certainly can control what they carry. All LE vehicles in my city and county have AR15s and Mossberg Model 835 shotguns. LEO carry .45acp in the semi-auto of their choice.

What JimmyRay says is right. It's the choice of the agency chief. The National Park Service Police in the SF Bay Area all have M-16s in their cars. Considering how long Ocean Beach or Fort Mason or how far the Marin Headlands are, it makes sense.

BTW, Ross PD patrol vehicles carries a .223 rifle, a 12 gauge and a yellow painted, non-lethal weapon loaded shotgun.

Most the San Francisco area police have rifles in the squad cars. Pretty much everyone bought .223 chambered rifles after the Hollywood shootout incident. Of course I feel if they are going after people with body armour a larger calibre would have worked just as well.

I can not imagine what more they could be armed with.

Not really, most SFPD squad cars here that I've seen do not have an AR15 in them. Actually it's quite rare if I ever do see one. And that's something I look for.

I do notice the smaller cities around SF, their PD's have ARs...

Okay, so the segment was supposed to air on Friday. It is now Sunday.

Is the SF PD outgunned? Probably not. Are individual officers outgunned? In cases like those mentioned by 4v50Gary, sure enough.
