I own a 686/4 inch purchased in late '96. I thought I might buy some wood grips but according to the Hogue site my revolver butt is round, however, the box indicates SB for Square Butt and my research shows only 2 1/2 inch 686's had the choice of Round Butt. My revolver looks exactly like the attached Round Butt picture. Now I am confused. Any help would be appreciated.

Greeting's Bow-

If your S&W 686 frame looks like the one in diagram A, it is indeed a
round butt model; thus requiring grips for that particular model. Are
you sure that the box corresponds with your specific gun?

A Picture is worth a Thousand Words

I checked and the box serial number matches the gun. Here is a picture of both. Round Butt....Right?

Looking at your picture your 686 is a round butt. The grips look like hogue conversion grips which give the shape and feel of a square butted gun.A few years back S&W started using round butts on most if not all of their revolvers.

Thanks for the help

I guess S&W indicated a square butt grip style on my 686 round butt revolver. Works for me. Anyway, I plan on purchasing some Hogue wood grips.......for a round butt revolver.

Thanks again for the help.

the notation, on the box, "SB" is made under the heading "stock". this refers to the stocks the are supplied with your gun, not the gripframe shape.

pistols have stocks just like rifles do...we just commonly call them pistolgrips

Thanks for the help

I appreciate all the fast responses. I like what Smith did because I think it will give me more options in replacing the grips. I'm looking for some smooth wood grips with finger grooves, kinda like the ones Smith used on the 65LS only bigger overall. If anyone has any suggestions or pics I would appreciate it.

Ahrends offers round to square conversion grips with smooth wood with or without the finger grooves. If you order from Ahrends themselves vs. Brownells they also offer a number of different types of wood. Unfortunately they don't have a website. Sometimes there are some on www.pickagrip.com or at least pictures so you can get an idea. Badger also offers conversion grips and pictures can be seen at:

I had a 686-4 that I sold a few months ago. I replaced the stock rubber grips with Ajax Wood Laminate grips (Item # WD 20TFG-CONV) in cherry wood with a S&W medallion. Very nice grips. They can be seen in the upper right hand picture on the page, next to the 1911 grip panels.

I recommend that you "Try Before You Buy." For instance, Hogues don't fit my hands worth a flip. The finger spacing is too close. On the other hand, the S&W laminated wood grips are just about perfect. Smith & Wesson sells replacement grips as shown on their website: www.smith-wesson.com
