Sharks!

Do a search on "BangStick" or some variant. It's a short staff set up to hold a shotgun shell, and has a triggering mechanism. As I understand it, there's no barrel as such. You poke the end up against the shark and pull trigger.

Ruins sharks, even big ones.

Yep bangsticks. Do a search for them back on TFL. There was a thread or two where they were discussed and I remember a link to a company that manufactured them in several calibers including .50 BMG . I think that one may also double as the worlds most powerful pogo stick too :D

50BMG? I wouldn't want anything to do with a 50BMG being fired anywhere near my hull unless it was very much outbound.

I always though sharks were supposed to be easy to kill. I know I've seen footage of those bangsticks being used on board, firing down. #4 shot? Buckshot? Or maybe they have a few ready with slugs for overboard stuff and a few with shot for onboard stuff. Or maybe decks are just a lot more durable than I thought! ?

I remember one thread from TFR but forget the details... better go check.

I'd read that bangsticks were used by divers, already in the water, as a shark defense. I'd be for leaving a serious shark on the flying gaff until he was really, really peaceful before bringing him onboard...

What about for someone above the surface water? If the shark is swimming close to the surface(i.e. close enough to be visible), will a high velocity round penetrate enough water to injure the animal?

Bangsticks are more of a contact explosive. Divers use them excavating type things, as well as defense against the big fishies :D
The cartridge basically sticks out of the end, and when you jab the stick into something the firing pin hits and sets it off. The blast does more damage than the bullet.

As for above water, I don't know. I would guess that you'd want a heavy slug of some sort. Probably FMJ to avoid deformation as it hits the water, which would eat up all its energy.

I'd toss a scuba tank into it's mouth and then shoot the bottom of the tank out with a Garand!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it;)
