I know we have beaten this subject to death about stocks for Savages, but.....

Does anyone know anything about the Varmint Tactical Stock for Savage Model 10? I like the looks of it, but no nothing about it, bu the following:

"Constructed of hand laid Kevlar reinforced fiberglass with super high density foam filler. Precision interior molded with molded in aluminum pillars and stud inserts make for a drop in fit. The finish is mil.-spec, chemical and solvent resistant texture paint, available in black and desert tan. Length of pull is standard 13-3/4" with a 2-3/8 wide beavertail forend. Comes with swivel studs and recoil pad."

It's $229.00, and right now I have the Duramaxx stock on my rifle - but think that one is going to fit the Savage LE1 .223 with the 20" bbl when it comes in to the MCX.

I have heard the tigger system they sell is excellent - which I'm going to order (my Savage has the old trigger).

Any assistance would be helpful.....:)

I've got one on my 10fp in .308. Its stiff as heck, light weight, the forend is over twice as wide as the factory stock, great palmswell, sturdy, textured finish, and stiff as heck. I love it!! I'd be tempted to put one on my new 12fv in .223 but for a walking rifle I'm inclined to try out the more streamlined DuraMaxx. But for the 'tactical' application the SSS is the ticket.

Oh, and as soon as I put it on my rifle, I shot a .25" group with 180gr A-Max loads....before that I couldn't beat .75". (I had to pack it up for the day because I was giggling like a little girl.) :uhoh:

Shalako,

Did you have any problems with the rifle touching the right or left side towards the end of the stock?

Mine touches the right side of the stock and will have to take some material off to make it sit center.

Thanks for the info.

GW45,
Well, actually, the SSS did contact on the right side a little so I just opened up the channel a bit and all is well. My method was to wrap some sandpaper around the right sized deep socket and sand the whole channel with pressure exerted onto the right side. Only took about 5 minutes.

Let us know how yours shoots!

Really? You sanded down the right side? I thought I would have to file down the left side to take the pressure off the barrel that is "pushing" the barrel to the right down the fore-arm.

Thanks I think I will try it and see. By the way - how much does the stock by itself weigh?

Next is the Nikon 4.5x14x40 Mil-Dot scope and a good set of rings and bases. (oh yeah, and the new trigger).

Thanks again,

Yeah, at the time I did not consider that maybe the barrel nut was contacting on the left and thus pushing the barrel to the right. The action set nicely in the stock and the holes lined up fine so I just figured the barrel channel was too tight on the right. I think off the top of my head that the stock couldn't weigh much more than a pound. I was suprised at how light it was. Have you tried to adjust your stock trigger yourself? I used the method here and got a pretty crisp trigger on mine. But I will someday upgrade to the SSS when money rolls in. For now, I've just gotta get that new large bolt handle from SSS. To use the vernacular, that thing is 'hecka tight'!

GW45: My Duramaxx stock contacts the barrel down the right side, too. I think that their manufacturing process is having problems. I haven't fixed mine yet but the people at the range who do the most shade tree gunsmithing also suggested sanding down the right side and not messing with where the action sits.

My brother is good buddies with Mario?) at SSS as he lives 15 miles from the shop in Delphos, Ohio.

My brother is a varminter who is big on Savages, big on SSS triggers and stocks and big on anything Ackley-Improved.

He says the SSS stocks are made of foam which is four times denser than those from McMillan or most of the other manufacturers.

I still have the stock stock which I have channeled to give more room for the barrel. I get .5MOA with my first batch of handloads and match ammo. I have the SSS trigger which was set by the factory as I had them true my action and install a machined recoil lug to replace the stamped one.

I just ordered some tools from Sinclair International (Indiana) for the purpose of measuring my chamber for max brass length, OAL, etc, etc.

I'll probably be getting an SSS stock eventually, but I don't know if I want the conventional stock or the varminter/tactical.
