I took a lady shooting for the second time this week end. It was cold and cloudy.

The first time we took a .22 single shot rifle a .22 pistol , a.410 single shot , and a 12ga pump. She wanted to shoot something bigger. So this time we took a 9mm ruger , a .44 mag super blackhawk, and a marlin .44 mag.

She had told some of her coworkers she had gone shooting and found out that 2 of the women she had worked with for years also went shooting. One of them said she should shoot a .44mag (guy) and one said she should try a red dot sight (girl).

The first time we went I told her she should not wear ear rings. This time I told her she had to wear a cap. ( she borrowed one of mine)

We started with the 9mm. She didn't like it too much, the trigger was mushy and the empties were hitting her on the cap. Recoil was not much more than the.22.

Next came the Blackhawk. I fired 1 shot and gave it to her. The first shot was good but on the second she changed to a tea cup grip and the end of the grip smacked her in the palm of her left hand. She asked me to show her the proper grip again! She said 11 shots were enough. Too much recoil and too heavy.

Next was the Marlin With the red dot sight. She was doing good at 25 yards. When she hit the 2 lieter bottle filled with water it barely moved just blew the bottom out. Next was a gallon milk jug filled with water at 50 yds. The first shot hit the rock it was sitting on. The second hit the jug dead center! It exploded and flew up and back about 8 feet. That was it another happy dance!!

She decided she likes the .410 and the marlin best. They are eaiser to hold and she has better control.

Next I have to borrow a 12ga or a 20ga auto for her to try.

I'm constantly amazed how most women shooters really enjoy a good punchy weapon. My friend shot a .22 for a while, but likes my 9mm better "because it feels like a real gun" as she puts it. Funny thing is, we tried some wobble trap the other day with my 20ga and due to how she had it sholdered it bruised up her arm really bad. The LOP was just way too long for her.

My wife's personal gun is a 9mm CZ-75B but her favorite is my Sig P220. She's got no real problem with recoil (or so she says - she still will not fire my .44 Mag - claims it's because of the noise ).

My girlfriend loves to claim my items. Latley the dog and my fullsize Kimber have became "hers".

No problem handling the 45 and keeping the COM.

I have taken my oldest grand daughter shooting a couple of times, she's 17.

The first time we shot my Ruger 22/45 and she liked it and did pretty good.

The next time she said she wanted to shoot something bigger. So I took the 22/45, Makarov, sa 22, 2" EAA Windicator .38/.357 and a single shot .410.
I also had my ccw, a Ruger P90 (.45).

I thought she would love the little Mak. She hated it. She said she could see the slide coming back and it made her think it would hit her in the face.

She really liked the P90, I should have taken more .45 ammo with me, as it was I hardly got to shoot it at all.

Her favorite handgun was the single action .22. This I got when my dad died, and it has already been willed to her.

Oh, she loved the .410. After the first shot it was all smiles.

Now the problem is that the next time we go, she has bragged about how much fun it is, I have to take my wife, a friend of ours, also female, my grand daughter, her step mom and one of my grand daughters friends. Fortunately they are all level headed no nonsense types. So the day should be fun.

Keep spreading the enjoyment, the more people we involve in our passtimes and pleasures the harder to take them away.

Oh, I almost forgot. The 2" Windicator. She fired a few cylinders of the .38 spcl and watched as I fired some .357. When I asked if she wanted to try the .357 she said "but it's a MAGNUM". I said it wouldn't hurt her and she said ok. Well, one round was enough for her. If you haven't fired a 2" .357 you should, the fire and smoke are even more impressive than the bang. Next time I'm sure she'll want to try it again.

I truly believe that grand daughters are put on earth to make old men feel important again.

I kid you not, boys, every new convert is one for the books.

I've taken a lot of women shooting for the first time. I've learned a few lessons, but more than anything else, evey woman we teach is a woman less likely to be raped or murdered.

And that alone is good enough. Whether she digs on your Buckmark .22, my cheap Taurus .38, her brother's 9mm, or a 1911 .45.

When we take them to the range we build self-reliant women. And ain't that what we all want?

My grand daughter has one of the targets from her first time on her bedroom wall. She says the reactions from her friends is priceless.

My wife loves to shoot. She gets jealous that she can't these days (she's pregnant). Since this will be our first kid my wife's shot up targets with comments like "The wife is...Dangerous" will continue to provide refrigerator art until junior learns of the mystic crayon.

BTW, she likes my 4" bbl, aluminum occifer-framed Kimber .45 with 20lpi frontstrap checkering the best. She too made some "real gun" comment about the .22.

Doesn't sound like a problem to me. I love teaching women to shoot. They're openminded, attentive and thrilled at the idea of having that much power at their fingertips.

We're planning a couples shoot at the farm this spring. Many of my friends, both shooting and non-shooting, have wives or girlfriends who don't shoot or have never been exposed to guns. We're going to have an abbreviated version of the NRA safety and pistol courses to introduce them to the joys of shooting, starting with, of course, the Four Rules and very basic theory, then some fun exercises with .22, 9mm, .38 Spl., and whatever anyone wants to try. Then after the guns are safely put away, up to the house for burgers and margaritas by the pool.

Should be a great way to introduce some newbies to our sport and, hopefully, recruit some 2nd Amendment supporters.
