There are a few sources for quality, inexpensive American knives. Unfortunately, some of the best deals come sans sheath, and custom knives also sometimes come without sheaths. Have any of you had positive experiences with sheath makers? Negative feedback? If so, for what type implement?
I will have- eventually, at least- three different types of sheath needs:
1) Large "outdoor work" sheaths. No need to be fancy, just sturdy and hold the knife securely.
2) Concealment sheaths. Retention, speed, and concealment will all be important. Kydex or similar will probably be preferred.
3) Dress sheath. Attractive and functional. This is the least time-essential, but
dress wear and gift giving dictate these at some point! :)

Any experiences re potential sheath makers will be greatly appreciated.

JShirley,

Boy have I got the guy for you. I ordered a sheath from The Sheath Mechanic I have been more than happy with his products and customer relations. His prices are more than reasonable. I seriously could not say enough good things about this guy and his products. Here are some of the things he has done for me.

This is my Leatherman Supertool 200/Micra piggyback that I have with all the time.

Here is a left handed CS Bushman sheath.

Here is the right handed version.

Here is my USAF Pilot Survival knife with the Micra piggyback.

Here is an updated USAF sheath with a GI compass/first aid pouch attached to it.(Another service he does) If you notice the sheath is also more compact than the previouse sheath.

And last but not least my Leatherman Micra Keychain/neck sheath.

I will tell you right now I do not work with of for the guy. I just kinda stumbled onto him and we exchanged a few emails and I ended up with a really nice rig for my knife. I still have a few ideas for things I want that I will send his way. I don't generally get this excited about a product but when it is something custom handmade for my specific knife or tool for a reasonable price I tend to get a bit giddy. All of this are completely sturdy and rugid.

If you got with him tell him clipse sent you. :D

hope this helps.

During my search for a BBQ holster and belt, I found a guy who makes fancy sheaths. When I get home, I think I've got his site bookmarked.
He'll make the grade for number 3 but he doesn't come cheap.

I don't know what exactly you are looking for with no.3 but for a tactical edge he also works with carbon fiber concealex. I don't have enything from him in concealex but rest asured once CCW becomes a law in Missouri I will have a mag holder from him in carbon fiber concealex.

i too ordered from sheathmachanic.co. i ordered a knife and kydex sheath for it. my order got lost and when i emailed him he quickly got the order done and shipped and refunded the price of the sheath. so i would say he's a stand up guy.who takes care of his customer. and i am very pleased with knife and sheath. saddlebum
