Posted on another forum, but as of yet , no responses. Wonder if you can help me?

I've been looking at .40's recently. Heard good things about the Eaa Witness, but I'm somewhat confused by prices and whatnot. Looking at EAA's website, it looks like the label "Witness" covers a wide range of firearms. I know that some are poly frame, and some are steel - there may be alloy frames too - I don't know.

It get's confusing when looking at prices and trying to figure out exactly what you'd be buying at that price.

Bud's has a 9mm Witness for $299 - a great price, but I don't want a 9mm, I'm looking at .40's. The lowest price .40 they have is close to $400, however. Why the big difference in price between 9 and 40? I believe they're both polymer frame. Most makers have the same price on 9mm and .40 guns in the same model.

On EAA's website, most of their models are over 500 LIST. But Cabela's had .40 cal Witnesses for $314 - a great price, but the "regular" price shown as $349. Is that regular price the LIST price? Why would Cabela's, who's usually on the pricey side, have the gun for so much less than Bud's? Am I looking at the same "Witness"?

Is Tanfoglio the only maker of the Witness, or are some outsourced to makers outside of Italy, hence the lower price?

Sorry for for the rambling, confused post, but I don't want it all to become clear to me AFTER I buy the $314 .40 cal. Witness at Cabela's. Thanks.

You are all over the place. Okay you want a .40. Steel or polymer single action or da/sa? What barrel length?

Tanfoglio is the only maker of the witness. They do make the less expensive Polly gun and the steel gun. With the steel guns they have the base model, then the "Match" , "Stock", "Hunter" and "Gold". My guess about the one a Cabela's is that it is used or it is Polly and the other is steel. As far as price goes I have never seen a Witness being sold new for the MSRP, I got a base model 10mm at cheaper than dirt for just over $400 and I also got a .45 / .22 combo for about the same price on Gun Broker. I love the witness line of guns so I say get what ever one you like better.

Don't forget the Stock II, Limited & Limited Pro

That is a great price, and if you're wanting one, you should jump on that.

Be aware, though, that (AFAIK) the polymer framed guns cannot accept the caliber conversion kits. With the steel framed witness standard, you can switch between .22 LR, 9x19mm, 9x21mm, .38 Super, .40 S&W, 10mm and .45 ACP for about $230/caliber.

"Witness" is a brand instead of a model of Tanfoglio pistols made for import by EAA.
They make several .40-cal handguns in steel and poly that constitute different models.

The ability to change calibers is very useful in the Witness brand.

But that's my POINT! The ads and models listed at stores and websites seem to be "all over the place".

Unless stores and websites list specific features, frame types or sub-types - and instead just use the generic "WITNESS" label to describe the gun - I don't really know what I'm looking at OR paying for. Still not sure why Bud's has one poly 9mm for $299, and another almost identical poly 9mm and .40 for almost $100 more.

The rest of you have been more help than that. HSO cleared things up some by relating that Witness is a brand, not a model. The acronym "EAA" is displayed so prominently, that I presumed that was the brand, but I guess it's the importer or something.

Thanks for the input. Think I'll talk to Cabela's about the gun.

Tanfoglio is the manufacturer. EAA (European American Armory) is the importer. Witness is a whole family of products.

Tanfoglio has a decent website. The catalog section explains all about the various models. Go get the information from the horse's mouth: http://www.tanfoglio.it/eng/catalogue.php

The witness 40 cal for $314 is probably a polymer small frame. Over the past year there have been steel and polymer small frame witness pistols come in. They have been priced around $300. Most witness pistols imported now are built on the the large frame.

The ads and product listings are all over the place on purpose. Sellers often downplay characteristics of a model by simply not listing them. Sometimes the fine print reveals all. Sometimes it doesn't. If the listing includes a manufacturer's model number, crosscheck it with the manufacturer's site. That usually fleshes out the story.
