Ok, so I'll be getting a hold of my newest (to me) shotgun tomorrow. Beretta AL-2 20ga 26" barrel, and I plan to use it to get my feet wet in the world of Trap shooting. Have a few weekends set aside to go with a co-worker to watch him shoot and get a feel for the sport.

Now, other that making sure my AL-2 is fully functional and has no issues, before I set foot on a range I need to find a good shell catcher. Any suggestions, and are there any models/types that really don't work well at all or specifically with the AL-2 / 301, 2, 3 series?

I appreciate any input, and any pointers/books for learning the sport of Trap.

You will have to use the stick on shell catchers made by Birchwood Casey. They are available at many on line retailers like Brownells. T&S does not make a snap on for your gun. They only make it for the 12 ga. AL2. You can get pointers from other shooters at your club.

Rubber bands. For a 12 gauge 1100, the red one used to hold fresh broccoli together is the right size.

Shell catcher

My local Sportsman's Warehouse stocks shell catchers made by Brownells. I have one on my Al391 Trap and it works great. You can also get them direct from Brownells, check their web site.

Okay, what's a shell catcher? I thought I knew until Dave recommended a rubber band...

It's a little gadget that catches the spent shell as it comes flying out of the ejection port and kind of hangs it there half out of the port. Then you grab it with your hand and drop it in your pouch. The purpose is to keep the ejected hulls from hitting the person next to you when you're trapshooting. It also makes life easier if you save your hulls for reloading. There are a couple of different snap-on or stick-on types, but you can also put a rubber band around your receiver and across the ejection port at a strategic point, as Dave recommended.

Thanks. I suspected that may be what you guys were talking about. Where do you place rubber band around the ejection port - I'm guesstimating it goes about 2/3 of the way rearward?
