I was wondering if anyone has had problems with shells stored in their tube magazine for long periods of time deforming or even deforming to the point were they no longer would chamber. If you have, do you have an extension or extra power spring in there and how long were they in there when you noticed the deformation? What about noticing deformation but not to the point where they wouldn't chamber?

I shoot all mine up to fast to notice (when I had a shotgun loaded) and lately I have been leaving a lever gun loaded in the house. What sparked my curiosity is on one of the sites (kreisler's maybee) I noticed russian shells with a full metal case on sale, and thought they would be ideal for anyone's long term loading, provided they patterned well and didn't have any other problems like cycling. Does anyone have any experiance with these?

Shot shell bulges are a problem.
I think this first appeared with plastic shells kept loaded long term in Police guns.

I have encountered it in both a standard Wingmaster and a Police model,
although it seems to be a worst problem in extended magazines.

It appeared in the Wingmaster within 1 1/2 months, and in the Police within 2 months. The Wingmaster had the stock spring and the Police had the stock heavy-duty Police Model spring.

Interestingly, the "weaker" sporting gun developed the problem first.

In both cases, the ammo was cheaper buck shot ammo. It SEEMS to be less a problem with Remington ammo.

People seem to worry incessantly about the magazine spring going bad, but it appears the real danger is shell bulges.

dfarris, good to see hear from you again sir, hope all is well.
As always I respect and listen to your posts - thanks.

In both cases, the ammo was cheaper buck shot ammo.

Have observed the same.

Personal experience -I couldn't really tell the difference b/t springs. Makes me think it is more ammo and the enviroment ammo and SG are in. Which brings to mind...

Why do folks buy nice guns, and use less quality ammo? Then blame the gun? I understand target, range, plinking...for the real deal I don't get it myself.

I'm partial to the Winchester , don't deny a bias, then again I have had less problems and more uniform performance accross the board with the 2 3/4" 00 loadings. I like the XX plated grex loads too.

Another phenomena I've observed:

People pay hundreds, even thousands on fine guns, then shoot Billy Bob's Certified Cheapest Ammo Ever Made brand ammunition through the gun, THEN they clean it with some home-made expedient cleaner or material.

Their bud tells them about using a nice cheap, replacement for standard gun cleaning equipment so they wind up running coarse steel wool or God knows what through it.

Then they wonder why their fine gun doesn't shoot as well as it used to.

There's an old saying....."Penny wise, Dollar foolish".

Your supposed to clean them? Thanks a lot dfarris...:D

I tend to agree , I too have seen "Billy Bobs" and "I got these reloads cheap at the gun show", and my gun won't run...or worse.

Cleaning: This is a burr under my saddle. I have a good friend ,my gun buddy, and folks will wear out a crown and bore - but never give the action, extraction, magazines, under extractor, gas ports...any attention. Forget Inspect and Maintain, but by gawd you could eat off the bore.

Personally I give focus to the important stuff like chambers, extractors on shotguns, gas ports/systems. I ran my guns and did the Inspect/Maintain and noted for that particuar gun the cleaning schedule. I ran as much as 25K rds a year through a SG, so yes I may have gone 1K rds before cleaning. That chamber, extractor, gas system, and adding oil as need was done as needed b/t cleaning.

I also have a burr under my saddle about "some" gun maintanance products companies. Claims, marketing, attitudes and such flat turns me off. I refuse to use them. I did fine for w-a-y too many years doing what I did. Then I started getting "stuff" in shooters kits, raffles, gifts and went down that slippery slope like an idiot...I regret I ever did.

Now it is my understanding if in the Military or somesuch agency on has to inspect / maintain/clean as "instructed or ordered". If these "instructions or orders are not followed, one gets busted. I don't care if the orders state that I had to clean with Mr.Bubbles and lube with Criso , 5 times a day...I would follow orders and do so. Don't mean a hill of beans if I agree or not with regimen.

Mr. Bubbles and Crisco may be the best stuff to use...or maybe the lowest the lowest bidder. Makes no nevermind...I gotta follow orders.

Environs , ammo, type of platform dictate ammo and cleaning regimen for us regular folks. A plinker or range gun only is a whole 'nuther deal that a firearm used for CCW, HD/SD.

Honestly had a guy that did not have enough ammo to shoot. He had spent $50 on a various new cleaning/lubing products...no money for ammo tho. He didn't need any cleaning/lubing stuff...must have tons of "previously bought" supplies. IF this stuff is "supposed" to last a bazillion rds and withstand the pressures of a space shuttle on re-entry, and temps gazillion below zero...why clean a "clean" gun every other day?

I kept the old simple Kleenbore and Kit and Kaboodle stuff, GI rods that came with guns. I use the old standard products. Everythng else I gave away in the form of new shooter kits for newbies and new CCW students.

My time/schedule is weird, I cheat. I will see my gunbuddy and let him do the inspect and clean on my gun while I shoot something else. Why? Simple, I do shotguns better than he so I show/teach/instruct the shotgun folks. I help him with other platforms. I run on and he does the cleaning as I may have to run to class or take someone for a Dr. visit or Chemo.

$50 will buy quite of bit of quality ammo, ammo reloading supplies, including a Mec reloader. Training, practice, good ammo, a reliable shotgun (firearm) inspected/ maintained properly will keep one alive ...that large box full of latest greatest marketed products to clean and lube won't. IMO
