Will a .45acp shellplate work with Springfield 30-06 shells on a 550B?? The fit seems just about right. Thanks!

-James

You can use use it, but you will need a 30cal powder funnel instead of the 45cal expander. I wish I could find that conversion chart on line.

Yes, it'll work.

And, while you're exploring multi-use shell holders and shell plates - -
The same shellplate "A" that you use for .45 ACP and .30'06 will work for a total of 28 different cartridges, including most of the Mauser rifle cartridges of similar length.

.223/5.56 and .380 ACP interchange.

Your 550B user manual should include a chart showing which plate to use for which cartridge. This will reveal other interchangeability.

Best of luck - -

Great, thanks for the info. This is my first time going into rifle reloading. One last question, with the dillon dies, do you have to seperately deprime a case if you only want to neck size it? In other words, does the die perform a full length resizing as it pops the old primer out?

Thanks again,

-James

The Dillon charts for the various kits and parts may be found at - -

Scroll down to pages 16 and 17.

These show not only the shell plates and powder funnels but locator buttons and the entire conversion kits. As you explore these, you'll see that you don't need to purchase the entire conversion kit for each and every caliber you might want to load. For example, all the 9mm-bore cartridges use the same powder funnel. And, while .308 and .45 ACP clearly require different funnels, the shall plates and locator buttons are the same. The more different cartridges you load, the more money you can save by careful perusal of the charts.

The page for all the various Dillon manuals is - -

jamz -- You should be able to neck size and deprime with a single stroke. Screw the sizing die out until it only reworks the neck of the case. You'll need to adjust the depriming stem to make sure it goes deep enough to function properly.

Best,
Johnny

Hey wait a minute here. You guys are gettin' me all confused?

What Lococator buttons need to be used ? :D

Jamz;

You can go either of two ways with the neck size - deprime question. Dillon offers a neck size only die for the .30-06, or, back off the present die until it's just sizing the neck & screw in the decapper till it pushes out the spent primer.

OK, how to tell how far to back off the sizer die? Go to NAPA & get the small tube of Permatex Prussian Blue. It's a mechanic's, machinist's marking dye. Put a small, repeat small, amount on the neck & shoulder of a test case. Back off the sizer die two full turns. Remember, you still need to lube the neck, and go ahead & size the test case. You should easily be able to see how far down the neck the die contacted the case. Adjust until it's sizing to just above the shoulder radius. You don't want to push the shoulder back, so don't try for the last .001", it's OK to be visibly short of where the neck flares out to the shoulder.

As a suggestion, also get the Dillon .30-06 case gage, part # C50-12679. It's an excellent tool, easy to use, & will take a lot of headache out of determining as to whether or not you got it right. Well worth the $18.95 price tag.

You said this is your fist rifle reloading gig

Are you aware that most semi autos function best with full length sized cases?
just fyi

SASS,

I understand that neck sizing results in more accuracy assuming the shell was fired from the same gun (and this is indeed the case), and the gun in question is a Ruger No. 1, so no worries there. :) I didn't know that fact though, if I ever start loading for my eventual Garand, however. Thanks for the info!

CB: That guage sounds like a good idea.
