There are a few cartridges that can be interchanged. But you have to be careful to know exactly which ones, and how the cartridges are different.
In revolvers you can safely shoot .38 Specials in a .357 Magnum -- but not the other way around.
.44 Russian and .44 Special work fine in a .44 Magnum -- but not the other way around.
The big .45s work like this:
If you have a revolver chambered in .460 Magnum, you can shoot .454 Casull and .45 Colt as well.
If you have a revolver chambered in .454 Casull, you can shoot .454 or .45 Colt. -- NOT .460!
If you have a revovler chambered in .45 Colt, you can shoot .45 Colt -- NOT .454 or .460!
Fortunately the more powerful rounds are longer cartridges and so will (hopefully) not fit in your gun, so you probably wouldn't have been able to blow your gun up -- but don't try it, just to be safe.
