Shipping a rifle... UPS Hub???

Yes, if a non-licensed seller is selling/shipping a handgun, find a good FFL dealer that'll treat you fair - say, $25 fee plus the shipping cost - and you'll get the job done for a little under $50 and won't have to worry about it being done right/legally. The FFL can even use the flat-rate boxes if the gun fits. Even if it doesn't fit the inexpensive flat rate box, the USPS shipping rate is only about $20-something.

For a long gun, an individual can ship via USPS no problem, and for the same cost as the FFL can do it.

I use UPS and send to an FFL all of the time and all over the Country with no problems. Always send it insured with delivery confirmation for a little less than 40 bucks. Of course it depends on how much you insure it for as well. It does have to go to a UPS Customer Service Center as I have verified that with them more than once. I setup an account with them online which makes life a whole lot easier. I refuse to use Fedex because their Customer service centers are 30.06 posted gun free zones...ymmv...

Just to be clear (because the thread has been a little all over the place)...

- Anyone can use USPS to ship a long gun to anyone in state or to an FFL out of state
- Only an FFL can ship handguns via USPS
- Anyone can use UPS or FedEx to ship long guns (same as USPS) or handguns to an FFL

And has been pointed out, it’s probably very cost effective to just ship through an FFL win a reasonable fee with a lot less hassle than trying to do it yourself.

You don't need to tell the clerk when you ship a long gun at post office. They don't ask if it is firearm and you don't need to tell them. Non-FFL individual can ship long guns at post office but not handguns.

USPS- Anyone can ship a long gun to any FFL anywhere. Also, an individual can ship a long gun to anyone in their state, no FFL needed. No notification to clerk needed. Throw a copy of the FFL's license inside if shipping to an FFL..

To ship a handgun via USPS, your LGS can do it, usually cheaper than you can via other carriers. The LGS can just ship it via a flat rate box and insurance costs, plus their fee.

UPS & Fedex, any firearm to an FFL.

What ticks me off is both UPS & Fedex require you to ship handguns overnight at ridiculous prices. Why? Because they're afraid of theft by their own employees. So you have to pick up the tab for what they consider untrustworthy employees. Nice, yeah?

Sold a couple of rifles and was just going to ship them via my tiny Post office in a town of 1200. However, went to the post office 100 yards away and the Postmaster had no idea how to ship a firearm.

After reading on his computer for a few minutes, printed off some pages and handed them to me and told me to research it.

I've been told that it would be cheaper to go through UPS. But I keep getting told that firearms have to be shipped from a UPS "hub".

I go to the UPS site and punch in my zip code and don't see anything called a "hub".

Nearest zip code with people is 83843. Anyone know where in my area I need to take my rifle??

There's nothing to mailing a LONG gun. Insure it, ask for Adult Signature Required and mail it.

Here are the applicable regulations:

432.1 General

Mailers must comply with the Gun Control Act of 1968, all of the provisions of postal law in 18 U.S.C. 1715 [no handguns], and all other all federal and state regulations and local ordinances affecting the movement of firearms. The following also applies:

1. The Postal Service may require the mailer to open parcels containing firearms or air guns or give written certification that the weapon is unloaded and not concealable.
2. Short-barreled rifles or shotguns that can be concealed on the person are nonmailable.
3. No markings of any kind that indicate the nature of the contents may be placed on the outside wrapper or container of any mailpiece containing firearms.
4. Mailable matter must be properly and securely packaged within the general packaging requirements in DMM 601.1-7.
5. Except for shipments between licensed dealers, manufacturers, or importers, all regulated firearms must be mailed using a USPS product or Extra Service that provides tracking and signature capture at delivery.

Handguns are another story. They can only be mailed by FFLs.

Firearms can only be shipped UPS at a facility run by UPS itself, not "UPS Stores", which are separate businesses. I stopped shipping long guns via UPS when they went to dimensional weight, which makes long packages very expensive to ship. If you do go UPS the nearest Customer Center is at 615 N Grand Ave, Pullman, WA.

Many towns have several places where you can drop off packages for UPS. But they are independently owned and none of those places will accept a firearm. A hub is the place where they load the Brown trucks. Luckily for me there is a hub in my county. Albeit on the opposite side of the county from where I live. If I have to use FedEx the closest hub is about 70 miles away.

I'm pretty sure a rifle can still go USPS as long as it is going to a FFL. I know it used to be that way. It has been a while but I've used USPS in the past to ship a rifle. Handguns have to go UPS or FedEx. Not a federal requirement, but UPS requires overnight shipping on handguns. Maybe rifles too.

The local UPS hub has odd hours for accepting packages. Just 2-3 hours in the early AM and 2-3 hours in the late afternoon. At least the last time I used them.

Yes long guns going via USPS is allowed; I would send it registered, especially if it is expensive.

Written policy is one thing but what they do at each location is sometimes off the wall and up to interpretation by the employee. Yes you can ask for a supervisor and all of that but personally I would not stand there and argue with a postal employee. Take my business elsewhere and not a hassle.
