So I have picked up some odd calibers that I would like to send home but I am not sure if its legal for me to just ship them. I am in California right now and I want to ship them back home to Texas. Was wondering how I would go about doing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fed-ex or UPS. There is a certain fee for ammo. USPS, I'm almost certain, will not ship any ammo, live or inert.

I used FedEx and I labeled as directed. All you do above normal labeling is add sticker stating:

ORM-D
Small Arms Cartridges

I actually use Avery return address labels printed from my computer.

I make the letters ORM-D red and at the top. The balance of the text is black

Color really doesn't matter though. Just put the sticker on the same side as the address label. FYI ... you can buy ORM-D shipping stickers at most office supply outlets if you'd rather

Do not ship ammo via USPS. It's a violation of Federal law.

How much ammo are we talking? What about just driving home with it? I usually order odd ball calibers from places like Sportsman's Guide. Why would you buy it in CA? What is the rest of the story, out of curiosity?

This. If you live in Texas and only visiting Cali. just bring it back with you. (If that isn't an option, for whatever reason, then Fed-X as described above)

There is no fee or anything special. You just have to slap a ORM-D sticker on it and be sure to ship it via ups or fedex ground. My fedex hub won't accept dangerous materials packages so I had to create an account online and arrange to have it picked up at my house.

Driving it home with you would be the easiest option. If you flew then you can bring it back with you on the plane. Look into tsa's guideline. I believe you just need it kept in original packaging and secured in a locked box. Buying a nice locking case may be cheaper than shipping.

I used UPS store, because FedEx flatly refused to ship any ammo. But that IL :-(
There is no special fee, just paid for the weight and speed.
You need to have label ORM-D be visible on your package.
Make sure that place you are sending to has no restriction to receive ammo like NY or NJ

CZ-75BD I used UPS store,
Which violates the carriers tariff.

Special Procedures for Shipping Ammunition
UPS accepts for transportation such ammunition as constitutes "cartridges, small arms," as defined in 49 C.F.R. § 173.59. All other allowable ammunition shipments are accepted only on a contractual basis, and must be prepared under the rules for a fully regulated hazardous material. Ammunition cannot be shipped where it exceeds 12.7 mm (50 caliber or 0.5 inch) for rifles or handguns or 8 gauge for shotguns. The package may not exceed 66 lb. (30 kg).

The shipper must comply with and must ensure that each shipment containing ammunition complies with all federal, state and local laws applicable to the shipper, recipient, and package, including, without limitation, age restrictions.

Use These UPS Services for Your Ammunition Shipment
In order to meet the exception for "Limited Quantities" shipments or ORM-D materials, which are not subject to the shipping paper requirements of subpart C of part 172 of 49 CFR, ammunition can only be shipped via UPS Ground, and only within the 48 contiguous United States, or via UPS Ground Intra-Oahu and Intra-Alaska. Shipments of ammunition with other UPS services must be prepared as a fully regulated hazardous material and are available only on a contractual basis.

Ammunition is not accepted for shipment internationally.

Packing and Labeling Requirements for Ammunition
All ammunition must be shipped in new corrugated packaging which meets the UPS Single Wall Box Strength Guidelines. Ammunition must be packed with internal boxes or partitioning or in metal clips. The internal boxes, partitions or clips must fit snugly into the external packaging that is securely closed so that it cannot open during transportation.

Ammunition will be transported only when packaged and labeled in compliance with 49 C.F.R. Part 172, et seq. regarding hazardous materials shipments, and must be shipped in accordance with the UPS Guide for Shipping Ground and Air Hazardous Materials.

For additional information regarding packaging and labeling requirements, refer to "How to Ship Ammunition (Cartridges, Small Arms)," at the link below, or contact UPS.

How to Ship Ammunition

Getting Your Ammunition Shipment to UPS
Cartridges, small arms may be shipped only through a UPS Scheduled Pickup Account (specifically, Daily Pickup, Daily On-Route Pickup, UPS Smart Pickup®, and Day-Specific Pickup), or through a UPS Customer Center (counters at UPS operational facilities). Note: Cartridges, small arms are not accepted for shipment via UPS Drop Boxes, and may not be tendered to or dropped off at locations of The UPS Store® or any third party retailer or UPS Access Point™ location.
Domestic Cartridges, small arms shipments that meet the exception for Limited Quantity/ORMD packages and that comply with all UPS requirements for the shipment of ammunition (as set forth above, in the "How to Ship Ammunition (Cartridges, Small Arms)" guidelines, and in the UPS Terms) may be delivered by UPS to a third party retailer or UPS Access Point™ location in the United States. See the UPS Terms for information regarding firearm and ammunition shipments.

Not sure why it violete UPS, if I sent via UPS store not drop box location and clerk accepted package.
In the FedEx store clerk told me that it is not allowed to ship any ammo at store I need to go to central hub location.

Wow, a great mix of truth and fallacy here!
I have been a serious ammo collector for many years, and I can guarantee you that the following is true:
-Illegal to send live ammo via USPS.
-Franchise UPS locations are not supposed to ship ammo.
-The ORDM sticker/labeling is no longer correct, just use the black and white triangle shown above.
-All ammo shipping must be via Ground.
-There is no added fee for shipping ammo.
-At least 95% of all UPS counter people have no idea what their own company's ammo shipping policies are.
-If you ship ammo often, the smartest thing you can ever do is to get a UPS or Fedex account: Pack, print label, stick on box, drop off at Fedex location. Easy Peasy.

It's a violation because the are not supposed to accept it.
You had a clerk that didn't know the company rules, unlike the Fed Ex clerk who did.

mdemetz The ORM-D label is being replaced, see;
http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/...mmo-shipments/
While it was correct when the article was written, its not correct now. The deadline has been extended to 12/31/2020.

jonnyc -The ORDM sticker/labeling is no longer correct, just use the black and white triangle shown above.
No, the ORM-D is still acceptable until 12/31/2020.

UPS even says so on their website:https://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/prepare/packaging/guidelines/ammunition.html

That said I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using the Limited Quantity marking because it doesn't scream AMMUNITION INSIDE!!!!

I travel a lot for work, and go to a lot of gun stores. I always look at the bargain tables, $5 box of 7.65 Arg ammo, or hard to find like 375 Win, etc. Stuff that you can't mail order. I'll buy ammo in any state that has it.

.

95%??? I think the number is much higher than that, at least 99.9X. the agents in the UPS stores are better informed than the employees at my depot. I once tried to send something to Scotland. UPS sent the box back for some reason known only to them. They refused to refund my money ($120.00+) because "We don't give refunds". To get my refund I had to put the charge into dispute. Cash payers are just out the money.
