For those who have sold a gun and had to ship it somewhere...what is the cheapest legal method you have found for sending the gun?

I ask because I just sold a 1.5 lb pistol and because FedEx/UPS require priority overnight shipping on handguns...it cost me $109 in shipping alone. I called a local FFL and he told me it would cost the same through them.

If this is the case I guess I'll have to find a new way to sell these. If I lose $100 per gun to shipping it's not going to be worth it to get rid of them...I'd just as soon keep them in the safe.

Why didn't you ask the dealer to ship it via USPS Priority Mail?......which he can do for less than half the cost of FedEx/UPS

Understand that DEALERS can MAIL a handgun, YOU cannot, if you were thinking of doing it yourself.

And next time you can have the buyer pay shipping costs, as I've done.

I asked two local dealers. My first estimate from the FedEx website was that shipping would run $70. I called an FFL and he said it would be $70 through him. At that point it was simply easier to use FedEx.

Today though the shipping charge turned out to be higher than the website estimated. I called a different FFL and he said it would be $100 for him to send it.

Clearly FFL's in my area aren't interested in shipping guns for people. I'll call around and check a few more.

Thank you for yet another reminder to keep things local. Face to face never fails. I once even drove several hours to another city to pick up a few things and considered it a long weekend. The last thing I want to do is put anything of significant value in the mail.

If you are shipping a handgun across state lines in a private sale. It has to be shipped through a ffl. Period.

False.

You need to read up on how to ship firearms...especially if you are going to attempt quoting laws to people. I don't have to be an FFL...I can ship overnight TO an FFL.

From the ATF website:

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

Mods...please close this thread...it's officially off topic and is now generating mis-information.

I typically collect $25 shipping for handguns on my auctions, and very rarely spend that much..........course I DO have an 01FFL and use USPS. I would charge probably $35-45 to ship for a customer (postage + transfer)

Some of you need to learn the law...and if you don't understand the law, why in the hell would you authoritatively tell people what they can or can't do? That's just making yourself- and by extension, all gun owners- look stupid. Don't do that.
