For those missing the target at say 0-15 yards, you need a lot more practice or perhaps a quality trainer. I have learned quite a bit over the years from what started at SOF 3 gun matches to todays "multi-gun" matches. Those with rigid thinking and the obtuse hold themselves back. What I have learned from 3-gun is that a lot of the stances, grips, foot work, goes out the window. Look at how better LE (I'll address that in a bit) and SF/SOF and now regular western ground pounder shoot, much came from competition shooters and 3gun. If you shoot on the move and are "runnin and gunnin" you need pay attention to the target and the timer while still employing safety and basic tactics.
I pushed a beat car for 20 years, we had shotguns ,870s. Nobody really knew how to run them or set them up, especially the golden children in charge of the range. There are "some" in LE that know what they are doing but most do not. Anybody that was on the job when the scatter gun was king I'm sure have a few tales of muzzle up muzzle down ventilations or NDs in or about the station. I know more than few offices that shot themselves, with pistols not shotguns Thank God. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that LE is not the de facto expert base to draw from.
The military peoples experience is also interesting. lets face it , now a days it probably wont be a primary weapon when you have M4/M4a1, M249 M240 with M203/M320. As mentioned above the shotgun is used more of a breaching weapon, its a specialty piece of kit, yes the Marines have their M1014 (M4Super 90) probably a few 590A1s floating around out there. Sometimes a short weapon is better than a big one.
With Shockwave/Tac14 comparing it to a stocked shotgun is comparing apples and oranges. The Shockwave/Tac14 are COMPACT (like a SBS), a stocked shotgun is not. This compact feature helps with carrying, storage, and close quarters type deployment. Yes, for most people a stocked pump/semi-auto with a 18.5-20" barrel will be "easier" to run. I can carry and move around discreetly my "firearms" easily, not so with a full size street howitzer. Most people don't really train or practice all that much, that's ok, a pump shotgun is pretty simple to operate that is why they are so popular. The Shockwave/Tac14 can be used effectively at close range with unsighted shooting techniques. I have no problem hitting a 12x20" steel target at 10 yards with a low under arm shooting position. How about adding a laser?? Remember when everyone thought lasers were a stupid gadget???
Shockwave/Tac14 gives us the "forbidden fruit", NFA must go, its an INFRINGEMENT. The platform may not be for everyone, I get that. But its completely valid and very useful. Learn how to run it and make correct ammo choices and you will be good. I have shot my "firearms" with slugs just as far as a stocked shotgun, it can be done.
