I have one of the "Green" Chrony's and only regret that I didn't get the one with the remote display. If I have trouble with reading the screen I just use some cheap binoculars.
As for the rods and Sky Screens, the screens are only necessary for CLEAR sky days. Here in the Pacific Northwest they are as plentiful as "cheap ammo". To save on damage caused by hitting the rods, just replace them with soda straws. Take some short pieces of welding rod, about 2" long and place them in the appropriate holes. Put some straws on the stubby rods (they're free at McDonalds). The straws are more visible sometimes than the rods and help get the shots over the eyes.
Also, if your range has fluorescent lights over the firing line, turn them off if you can. Even in daylight conditions this "flickering" light will effect your chronograph. The lights go on and off twice per second and give a false reading to the chrony.
