.40's will work in a Glock 20-10mm barrel. I ran a few through mine and then ordered a KKM conversion barrel. I have had no functioning problems at all-100% reliable including slide lock. It works in a Glock because of the HUGE extractor. The extractor provedes a grip on the cartridge which substitutes for proper headspace. It's probably hard on the extractor which is why the conversion barrel is important. I don't think I would try it in a S&W without a conversion barrel, which might be hard to find for a discontinued pistol. If you don't like the Glock, consider a Kimber or Dan Wesson, Conversion barrels are available, You could probably order it with one from the factory. In the Glock 20, recoil with the .40 is so soft it's almost funny. .40 brass flies only about 6-8 feet with the standard recoil spring. For self defence go with the 10mm, Corbon 165 jhp's are very easy to controll, and are slightly faster (100-150fps) than the .40 version. Recoil in my G-20 with Corbons is softer than a .45 in a 1911 frame and equal to a .40 in a G-35. The S&W's have a thinner frame and higher bore axis than the Glock so percieved recoil and muzzle rise will probably be more. But the 10mm is suprisingly easy to handle. If you want a true dual caliber pistol the Glock, Kimber and Dan wesson are better choices than the S&W.
