Hi Folks,

quick 2 questions....

I am a right handed but left eye dominant shooter. Are the adjustable sights on the Ruger 10/22 rifle able to accomodate a shooter like me if the shooter wants to shoot with the right hand and non-dominant eye? (i.e are the sights able to compensate enough?)

For keeping dangerous feral animals weighing up to 100lbs off ones property, will 10 rds of .22lr in quick succession suffice?

I can't answer your questions, but I do wonder: ever consider slapping a scope on your 10/22? I found the sights on the 10/22 didn't work well for me, but my accuracy is very good with a scope.

Also -- and I admit I'm speculating here -- for most animals under 100 lbs, I doubt it would take 10 rounds to chase 'em away. One or two clean hits should do it. The noise alone might scare the animal away.

my two cents worth:

I recommend that you get a Red dot 1X scope with a large appeture (sp?) like the one i have on my ruger standard:

Its large enough to allow you to easily find your target quickly and is great for following a moving target. i think the price is like $35 or so.

I would also get a Power Custom Hammer to bring the trigger pull down to 2 1/2 pounds. it makes all the difference between hit and miss, cost is about $30 from Cabellas, but its worth every penny. Also i recommend getting at least one Butler creek Steel lips 25 round mag. Also, if you have some extra $$ get a Volquartsen Bolt buffer.

As for ammo on such large animals (wondering what kind) i recommend you try out CCI Velocitors. they are 40 grains, flat nose and pretty fast. the bullet should hold together and retain enough energy to penetrate deep into lung tissue. avoid hollow points as they are lighter and expand to fast and loose alot of energy upon impact. with this big of an animal, try to keep the distance around 50 yards. good luck -Eric

It isn't so much a matter of the sights compensating, it's a matter of being able to get your eye lined up with the sights. The factory sights on the 10/22 are low to the bore, and I think you're going to have a hard time getting your head into a position where you can use them. My wife is also cross-dominant, and in situations like this it's easier for her to shoot left-handed.

The red dot might work for you, since people generally use them with both eyes open.

Edit: I think I misunderstood your question. Are you asking about shooting right-handed, and using your right eye? If so I don't see how that would be a problem.

I don't precisely know if it will help you 100%, but the tech-sights might be what you are looking for. It will be a big improvement either way if you want iron sights on your 10/22.

+1 Some very good advice there

I have a CHEAP CHEAP scope on my 10/22. I also use CHEAP CHEAP ammo.
Out to 75 yards I have one shot kills 4 out of 5 times on feral cats. Start CHEAP and go up from there.
