a rest is not required but it will most certainly help you get the last bit of wiggle out of your firearm when you bench it for accuracy. I did not use one for years and finally saw the light. It also helps to fill a couple of empty shot bags with sand and use these to rest the forearm of your shooting hand while shooting.
