Shooting in St. Louis--home occupants felt threatened

Charges filed today
A St. Louis County woman was charged with second-degree murder today in the killing of a teenager at her home on Monday.

Alma King, 51, was charged in the shooting incident. Her son, who also was involved in the shooting, has been referred to family court. His name was not made public; neither was the name of the teen who was killed.

I don't know Mrs. King or her son, but this was a bad shoot. On the other hand the thugs who terrorised her should be punished.

BTW there was a gang beating story out of the Junior High School in this district about six months ago.

Pending further information my take is Mrs. King is a decent person, who was confronted and assaulted by thugs, who used deadly force in a situation where it was unwarranted, but could have escalated to a deadly threat in an instant.

The shoot is less than good, but it may not be entirely bad either.

A large hostile group of teenagers were at the house demanding that the boy be sent out for the purpose of assaulting him. The group then proceeded to assault the structure by throwing objects at it. Things could have escalated from there. I suppose part of this will hinge on whether the occupants of the house believed that the hostile group was escalating the situation to the point where deadly force may be necessary.

The occupants of the house were in the house. Retreating from the house would have put them in immediate danger as the mob was outside the structure. Sounds to me like they were already cornered. Had the youths been throwing fire bombs or been shooting at the house, I think the shoot would have been completely justified. If the occupants had thought that this may already be happening, then the shoot could be strongly argued for. If the mob was rushing the door, it could be justifiable too. Just have to see what comes of it once more details come out.

need good lawyer

and the video will play big role dad must think it will help otherwise i woulda had a camera malfunction.

I see no reason for any kid to have to come out of his home in response to a mob of kids whose sole purpose is to beat him up. As a parent, I would feel it necessary to protect my child. As for him getting in a fight with another kid and taking a mild licking, that can be excused. There is no telling how bad a beating this mob would have administered. As pointed out, they had NO BUSINESS WHATEVER invading someone's home area in order to perform a criminal activity.

I will not comment on the right/wrong of the shooting as all information is not in. I think the Superintendant's comments were a note that the deceased has a lot of relatives(potential for revenge) rather than some form of threat to the shooters on behalf of the deceased or any gang.

Again, how far over do we have to bend when someone else is clearly in the wrong. If throwing rocks and sticks is not sufficient provocation, do we have to wait for them to shoot first or start throwing molotov cocktails? They had no business being there.:fire:

Shooter now charged with 2nd degree murder

Looks like we have our answer, at least from the perspective of the DA in St. Louis County:

St. Louis County prosecutors charged Alma King, 51, on Tuesday with second-degree murder in the death of a 15-year-old in a confrontation the day before with a group of teenagers outside King's home in the Spanish lake area of north St. Louis County.

Police said King and her 16-year-old son opened fire into a crowd Monday afternoon. Her son was referred to the juvenile court for possible charges.
Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said his office will review the case to determine if adult charges are appropriate for him.

The charge identified the victim as Jocques Billups, 15 . Friends said he attended Hazelwood East High School with King's son. Another student in the crowd, 16, was wounded.

McCulloch and police declined to discuss the specifics of the case, particularly what led to the confrontation.

Witnesses told police and reporters that a crowd of teens gathered outside the house, in the 1100 block of Prigge Avenue , about 3 p.m. Monday, calling out King's son for a fight. A neighbor called police for help, and county officers were dispatched to the house for a "fight in progress," officials said. Dispatchers changed the call to "shots fired" just as the officers arrived .

Police said no one called for help from inside the house before the shots rang out.

I guess they're considering charges against the 15 year old as well. If anyone in STL saw this on the news, is the coverage any different? Any additional facts?

There are 30 people after me? Just one hard punch or kick from each would be a bad beating that could result in brain injury, internal bleeding, broken bones, neck/spinal cord damage and lifetime paralysis. Sounds bad to me.

The old saying..."the best defense is a strong offense" comes to mind.

I don't know what brought on the whole event. If it was bad enough for this mob, they should have called the police themselves. When the mob showed, mom and son should have called police. Still, defend yourself.

Mark.

We're all speculating still. If time allowed, proper order should have been (I believe):
1. Call 911
2. Fire warning
3. Defend self
There could have been several intermediate steps between 1 & 2, also. Hard to judge the level of risk from a mob of teenagers, but I probably would have been scared and do not know how to disperse a large, angry group.

Bingo! I also hope Dad was smart enough to have a copy duped for the news media so the Jury pool could be adequately tainted.

He was real quick to turn over the tape to the police, so it may contain exculpatory evidence.

Just armchair speculation, but it took the PA a day to bring charges. Pretty long time if this was a dead bang case. My money (on real long odds) is that the prosecutor brought the charges so he couldn't be called out on this case, but that the ultimate verdict will be light. There is a kid dead, and we don't know that he was an onlooker or an instigator (if that would matter), but he was 15 years old.

I still believe that this was a bad shoot. Shoot in the air, whatever, but to fire in the crowd is prima facie bad. If the tape shows the individual shot as a perp approaching the residents of the home in a menacing manner I might change my judgement.

Just on the face of it, it would seem it's another case of being Legal and being Right are at odds with each othe.

I did notice in the news video that no windows appear to be broken nor the glass in the storm door. I wonder what the size of the rocks were that were alleged to have been thrown at the house. Seems a bit inconsistant with the story. Actually, at this point, there are a lot of inconsistancies. It will be interesting to watch the facts come out over time.

Tinker2, I'm not sure we are communicating at all well. Is it your contention that the school superintendent is in a gang and trying to intimidate the family or is trying to intimidate the family for a gang?
NO, not my intention to say that the super is in or for
a gang. She is not going to do anything. She's not going
to sic anyone on anyone. a poor response on my part
from not reading your full question.

kevin davis’s response is closer to what I was thinking.
“I think the Superintendant's comments were a note that the deceased has a lot of relatives(potential for revenge) rather than some form of threat to the shooters on behalf of the deceased or any gang.”

I don’t know why else she would say that the dead criminal
has cousins and sibling at school.

I might be intimidated if 12 to 30 thugs attacked me or
mine and I was told the one I killed had bunch of relatives.

I am responding with out knowing all the facts.

If I or my family's lives were in immediate danger ( a thug
at my home armed and trying to cause us harm ) I would
not take the time to call the police first. I would secure
the situation first. If you have a lot of time call 911 or go
away, do both if you can.

The police’s job is not to defend you, it is to investigate
what happened to you. If the thug kills you and is ever
apprehended, he/she will most likely get away with it.

If a police office is faced with a armed gang of thugs
intent on violence, he doesn’t call 911, he calls for backup.

I think that the woman that was on her property, defending
her son, is sitting in jail for it, is disgusting.

Any of the thugs from the gang in jail for the assault?
