There used to be a pretty nice outdoor shooting range in Cherry Creek when I used to shoot a lot (years and years ago). I remember it was closing down, or was going to close down, or something like that. What ever happened? I've got a noob I'd like to teach, and that was always a pretty good place to do it.

Hmm--could be, but I'm pretty sure it didn't have that name back then. For what it's worth, the pistol area where I shot had a really old-fashioned target return system that was more or less a clothesline. :)

Probably a good place for me to take the noob, then. Should be quieter and less strange-basement-ish than my usual haunt.

This seems like a bit much, though:

Q: Do I need a case for my firearm?

A: Yes - without exception. You must have your firearms unloaded and cased before they leave your vehicle. Hard or soft cases are acceptable. You may purchase an inexpensive case from us, but please leave your firearms in your vehicle until you have cased them.

The range has nice facilities, but was pretty Fuddy even before the name change. As part of the CO School of Mines Shooting Club, we went there several times and put a lot of lead down range with school-owned .22 match rifles, hunting guns and various revolvers. Nobody in the club had enough $$$ to own a scary assault-type firearm, so it was not an issue. I do remember that they frowned on "combat" targets back in the day- bull eyes were preferred.

I'm teaching her with bullseye targets anyway, but ... I can't help but wonder if they really mean to include everyone's CCW. Some ranges and stores have an "All firearms must be unloaded" sign, but it's a given that it doesn't apply to my CCW.

On one hand, the "Fuddy Factor" (if I may borrow your word to coin a phrase) is what I'm looking for when I choose a range to visit with a noob. On the other hand ... hm.

I have been there a few times in the past year.

There's no clothesline arrangement for pistol targets.

There's always an RSO running the firing line. I have never seen any unsafe behavior.

You'll need a Colorado State Parks pass to get to the range.

Give it a try.

Is the ammo still way over priced there? I liked that place, when I lived in CO, but the ammo was outrageous sometimes

I went trap shooting there a few years ago. Seemed like a decent place to shoot but if I was going to shoot pistol I would recommend The Firing Line in Aurora. Better facility for handguns (FMJ only facility though).

Haven't been to the Firing Line in a long time either. I usually just go to Silver Bullet. What makes the Firing Line a good place for noobs? Thanks.
