Shooting range orientation

The range where I usually shoot is oriented such that we shoot from south to north and that seems to work well as the sun is never a problem.

Of late I've been hunting around for some land to acquire and if I do buy something I'll want to fix up my own range. The couple of acreage parcels that have generated some interest so far would definitely require a 100 yard or more range be oriented east-west. Is that liable to be a significant problem?

When you shoot with the sun in your eyes, it sure will be. Every shotgun club and rifle range I have used has been S to N like you are used to for exactly the reasons you mention

My little back yard range faces west.... it really stinks in the afternoon!

My rifle range is oriented E-W and is only open from noon-5PM when the sun is down range. Annoying, yes, very, impossible to shoot, no. Sunshades on scoped rifles, sunglasses that are ANSI rated for other rifles. Late in the day in the winter the sun will be at a point where neither will allow you to shoot, but in the morning it'd be fine.

The range I use is east to west. It's almost impossible to shoot during late afternoons in the summer plus it is HOT under the canopy. Wind is a big factor here also. If the range were laid out northeast to southwest I could get in a lot more shooting without so much trouble with wind drift as the wind usually blows from the southwest.
