My 20-acre slice of heaven--3 acre lake stocked w/
Hi folks, new here and am looking for help/ideas for building my own shooting range -- I'm outside city limits, have 20 acres (includes 3 acre lake, 6 acres horse pasture and house/yard).

My nearest neighbors are a couple of miles North, with an Air Force Base a few miles South. A State roadway just West, and open rangeland Northeast and East.

I currently hunt upland game birds and ducks on the property (plenty of room for shotgunning) but for pistol I rely on a natural upslope to the North and Northeast. I realize that a professional range would certainly need berms, backstops, covered areas, etc. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Jeff

Personally, I'd have somebody spend an hour or two out there with a dozer or backhoe and give yourself a nice berm to shoot pistol/rifle into. You would be surprised how many rounds can manage to "skip" off your upslope (or what is just underneath it).

if i ever get a good plot of land, and my wife allows it and i have the money, i would so do that too. great idea. although check with the air force and get it inspected so its legal and you can't get in trouble or anything

There have been several threads discussing indoor and outdoor range construction that a search of General should pull up for you.

What you might do depends upon a sliding scale that starts with how much money you have and ends with how much access to construction equipment you have.

Like posted above someone with a backhoe and a cpl of hours and its pretty much done..... if you already have a bermed spot your shooting at dig out some at the base of it and have a few large loads of sand dumped into a pile to shoot into.

Here's some photos from my gun club ranges, for some ideas. It's a far larger place than just these photos. A covered shooting area for sun/wind protection is great, IMO.
