I joined an outdoor club recently and they have a steel range. Up till now I've only shot paper indoors. OMG I can believe how much fun shooting steel is. I had my RIA Tactical with a Ciener 22lr conversion upper. Shot about 200 .22lr rounds with that. Then I took out my Tanfoglio TA90 9mm and shot another 100rnds with that. I followed that with 200rds for .40S&W in my Beretta PX4. I ended my session with 300 Rds thru my STI 9mm Spartan 1911. They have 8" and 11" rounds at varied heights, 24" and 36" ground poppers, two resetable rows of 6 11" plates at 4' high. They also have raised steel bins where you can stand up bowling pins. Shot most from the 15yrd line with some from the 10yd line. I was most accurate with the .22lr and the STI Spartan 9mm both 1911 imagine that. This is bad - real bad I am so hooked my ammo bill is bound to increase...

Yes, shooting steel is fun.:)

My backyard targets are steel, although I do shoot paper targets as well.

And favorite 50 yard steel targets are a 1 foot and 2 foot square steel plate.
The first time I had my friends here shooting that foot square steel target they had a ball.

I couldn't agree more! After shooting paper for years, I needed more....To hear and see something move, or fall when hit, adds a whole new excitement to the sport! Better get a progressive reloader now!

safety glasses

+1 on shooting steel. I was attending our local clubs match recently and was reminded how important it is to wear safety glasses. I was loading up at my car, easily 45+ yards from a steel target, with someone else was shooting at the time and I was hit in the face with a piece of lead off of the steel target. It was a reminder of how important it is to put your safety glasses when you get to the range!

wrap around safety glasses are almost a requirement for shooting steel.
I love shooting steel, won't go to a range that won't let me bring mine along.

As alphabrace said, fragments travel a LONG long way after hitting steel. At a cowboy matcjh one time, the vendor's tents were being peppered by large chunks of lead, and Vendor's row was a long way from the firing line.

I like a mix of steel and paper... as others mentioned, safety glasses are a must, as you will definitely get the "lead rain" treatment just as surely as if you are downrange of the shotgun line. I've been at a match where they had a paper target an inch in front of a piece of steel that had to be knocked over. The amount of exit holes in the front of the paper from the splash coming off the steel was impressive.

yep shooting steel is a ball!! i have a steel actual size bowling pin silhouette target my friend made for me.... it will hold up to lead .357 magnum shooting.... i also hung a small propane bottle cut in half on my target holder and shoot them both in my backyard with an rws model 34 air rifle.... the thick steel pin target didn't ring or move enough but the bean can size propane tank does.... i have shot the pin target with a .357 magnum handgun..... it's canted just enough that the lead splash mostly hits the ground below it.... the can size target is for .17 caliber air rifle only... and the rws puts a hurt on it from 33 ft out......

LIFE IS SHORT.....
