Am I correct in assuming the only 10mm guns available new are the EAAs, Glock 20, and Smith and Wesson 610?

If those are my choices I'm leaning toward an EAA but there aren't many out there new or used. Davidson's search only lists the blued full size even though there are 2 other finishes, the compacts, and the Pro Hunter.

Anyone know good prices? Local shop says about $340 on the blued full size which sounds pretty good to me. I'd love a long-barreled verson but haven't seen one other than the hunter but I don't want to pay for the camo, the porting, or the words "Pro Hunter".

Also am I correct in surmising that only the Glock has more than a 10 round capacity?

Hmm, didn't see any 10mm on Kimbers website. It's very new from what I can find. It didn't show up in the search on Davidson's so I'm guessing it's not available yet. Not sure I want to know what the price will be either :uhoh:

I found the Dan Wesson, the MSRP of $800 looks like more than I want to spend but if the street price is signifigantly lower it might be an option.

10mm

Snowman ,go to Lou Horton dist. they carry DW price is from about 7 -9 hundred, also kimbers web site has them in the new releases, still waiting for mine to come in! the DW razorback i have is great, try it you will love it!

The Witness in wonderfinish is cheap enough for you to try the 10.
I'm sure you will like both the cartridge and gun.

10mm options ...

Actually, the Kimber 10mms have been shipping for a while now:

http://www.kimberamerica.com/pr.php

If you go over to the 1911 Forums, you'll see where a number of Kimber 10mm owners have posted Range Reports.

Unless you have to have a full-size model, both Tanfaglio and Glock offer compact models (the quite popular 29, in Glock's case).

Smith's 4" 610 revolver is nice, but I wouldn't pass on a like-new Smith 10XX-series autoloader just because, technically, it wasn't manufactured yesterday. These are great guns. If yours is intended for CCW, not just targets or competitive events, keep an eye peeled for a 4.25" S&W 1066/1076/1086 models.

The S&W 10mms are 9+1 capacity, while the Witnesses are 10+1. Yeah, AFAIK, the Glock 20 is the only 15+1 10mm autoloader, if you can access the 15 rd "preban" mags, which are quite expensive these days. The 10mm Star MegaStar held, I believe, 14+1, but my understanding is that hi-cap 10mm mags for this gun are about as rare as mags for the old Bren Ten.

I'm a cheap bastard and a tinkerer so I'll probably end up with the EAA. If it doesn't work it gives me a project ;) For the cost of a "nice" 10 mm I can buy the EAA and completely rework it a couple of times with various barrels, magazines, slides, and machining time.

Of course when I'm done I'll have a worthless EAA still but that's OK. I never sell stuff I can't at least break even on or has any sentimental value.

Aftter you see how well the CZ75 design is for reliability and durability..
you will probably want a real CZ. You live in the right town:)

Good luck with your Witness purchase. I haven't broken mine yet!!

I like my reemed 40 pre II Kimber best and it was $525 like new.

My "target" Witness works great and shoots good groups, it's also been 100% reliable and is the best bang for the buck. All it needed was the rear sight changed for a fixed one and a stiffer recoil spring.

You can get this gun from www.cdnninvestements for $329. it is a 1 of 100 run and comes in wonder finish which is very tough and the porting really helps on this type gun.

Don't over look the S&W 1006 and 1076, got one of them too! Bren

Agtman, I'm pleading guilty to laziness, but since you're here...are there sources for replacement grips for the S&W 10xx pistols, either stock (straight to curved conversion or vice versa) or aftermarket wood? (Hogue? Others you know of?) I assume any grip that will fit one of the full size 45xx or 40xx pistols will work??? Tks!

Found the Hogues...are there others worth looking at?

Black Snowman, I have been shooting a Glock 29 recently -- the first Glock I've ever fired. This is a surprisingly good pistol and with one small mod it passes the Goldilocks test (neither too big, nor too small, just about "right") -- the only qualification being that I tried the Pearce magazine floorplate/grip extension and find that having a place to put an extra finger makes a difference to my big hands.

Ya CZF, I've posted on CZforums.com mentioning my desire for a CZ-97B in 10mm. That would be very sweet indeed. I think I'll settle for a Wonder Finsih EAA for now unless you can get me the financial backing to start manufacturing CZ-97B after-market uppers in 10mm ;)

I saw the CDNN add for the 9mm and .40 target models, I'll look again for the 10mm.

JNewel, I'm mainly looking for a full-sized gun. Something with room to burn the extra powder of the 10mm. I really like my Glock 24P, was my 1st handgun and I've never regretted it, but the sights had to go. Just can't stand the "dot and bucket" sights.

If KS ever gets CCW I'll probably pick up a 27 to be my "little" gun. One of the reasons I'm looking at the 10mm is because I already have dies and bullets, I'd just need to get brass. Plus if I'm going to move up to a larger frame gun I'd rather have the extra muzzle energy of the 10mm over the .45 ACP.

Thanks everybody for your responses, you've all been a big help.

Thanks Preacherman, I had noticed that thread. It's been a long time since I've handled a 1911 pattern gun. They used to not fit me but it's been years. I think I'll hit the range this weekend and rent one and see how I like them now. A DW may be in the cards for me.

JNewell:

Yes, Hogue offers wood and soft rubber grips for the Smith 45XX-series and the 10XX-series, the exception being for the 1076 & 1026, the models w/ the Sig-style decocking lever on the frame. AFAIK, no Hogue grips for these.

Hogues are the only aftermarket grips I'm aware of for the 10XX-series. Remember: the Smith .45s & 10mms are large-framed guns, so grips for the 9mms & .40S&W won't fit them.

On the factory grips, S&W still sells all the black derelin grips for the 10XX-series. I don't have the specific product #s, but they're the ones with the straight back strap, curved backstrap, and for the frame-decocker models only (1076/1026) there's a curved backstrap with a "palm swell."

Some who've tried the "palm swell" grip on a 1076 have said it feels more like the Sig 220's factory grip - if that's a helpful comparison for you.

HTH. :)

When I first decided to buy a 10mm I passed up a nice S&W 1076 for a new Witness because I like my CZ-75B so much and the Witness is a CZ clone. It took a little tweaking but the Witness was eventually 97% reliable and fairly accurate. But it still wasn`t built with the same quality as my CZ and after talking to George at EGW I became convinced that it wasn`t up to a constant diet of the HOT 10mm loads I like so much. I finally traded it today for a nice mag-na-ported S&W 1006. I`ve been lusting after them for the last few years. I haven`t fired it yet but the overall quality, fit and finish are a big step up and it`s built like a bank vault. :D Don`t overlook the big Smiths if you like traditional steel frame/DA pistols. Marcus

STI's are pretty fabulous but that much money goes a long way tward some other good stuff I want, like a concrete floor for my garage ;)

I doubt I'd manage to even wear out the poor little TZ Especially if I can track down a long slide like I want. If CZ would make a 10mm that would solve all my decision problems. I REALLY want a big CZ, they fit me SO well it's obscene.

BlackSnowman,
Sounds like you are already sold on the EAA but just in case you were wondering how much a Dan Wesson went for in this neck of the woods it's about $750 +/- for a Razorback and about $650 +/- for a Pointman.

KY Imports still has used 1076s for $350 or so. At least one very recently received sample  was very, very clean -- some holster wear, but otherwise excellent and a great price for a rock-solid pistol.

I just fixed a set for my 1026. It took 10 minutes of careful work with a dremel tool. They feel great!
