Shortage of Wolf ammo

Well Mike E from cheaperthandirt.com
1. ALL myths have some basis in truth.
2. People who post on the internet and don't get paid a wage nor make a profit from their opinion are not all liars and myth spreaders.
3. I work in a retail gun shop and deal with returns of Wolf ammunition in all calibers and there is a lot of the stuff returned to our shop and to other local shops in all calibers.
4. I also work as a gunsmith and have repaired more than a few firearms that have had problems with Wolf ammunition.
I admit I have never seen a firearm that was exploded using Wolf ammunition but I have had to yank the crap out of more than a few chambers when the cases seized in place.
5. In fairness to 7.62X39 we do get less return rate on it than the other calibers.
6.In retort, it is the positively worst shooting and grouping 7.62X39 that I have ever fired and I have tried it in about every manufactured weapon in this caliber.
7. It smells bad.
8. If you are indeed involved with Cheaper Than Dirt you are in the business to make money.
I too am in business to make money but I don't advertise here, I don't list my website, and I don't do this for profit.
I do this because I love the shooting sports and if I offer an opinion, the opinion is based on personal experience, not my desire to move some product.
Perhaps this is a lesson that the Russians may contemplate, stick to making ammunition you understand.
This is an OPINION from an individual long employed in the free market economy.

Onmilo,

You are entitled to your opinion, but so am I, and let me tell you that I have shot Wolf ammo a TON over the last few years, and I have been very satisfied with the ammo, not only because of price, but because of quality. I actually use the Wolf .45 as my carry ammo, because after shooting something like 15,000 rounds of it with no problems, it has earned my trust. Now then, you make the argument that you have had to pull cases out of guns that are dirty. Wolf ammo is dirtier, no doubt about it, but to me that is an operator issue, not an ammo issue, at least not directly. You say it smells bad. Well, no argument there, although in my opinion that is a little overblown, but then again, maybe my nose isn't as sensitive as yours or others. Anyway man, your basing your opinion on your own observations, and thats not a problem, because I am doing the same thing. I like it, you don't.

no shortage today

This has been on here before but just heard from the gun shop why...Apparently Wolf has been given the contract to produce 7.62 ammo for the Iraq effort and is concentrating on meeting that fulfillment before shipping back here to the States. So there is no approximation of when we will get more Wolf or how much the price may be when it is back. Looks like Silver Bear and Yugo surplus will be what's left for now.

Plenty of Wolf 7.62x39 and .223 at the Houston gun show today. Several dealers had 1000 round packages.

only substantial thing i have to add is that the stuff i saw a contractor loading into his akm looked EXACTLY like wolf. i handled it and except for the headstamp it seems identical to the polymer coated stuff i shoot at home.

p.s. i use wolf pretty much exclusively in my ak and i love it so there:neener:

Out here in Utah, Wolf 7.62x39 is just about imposible to find. I was able to get some at the gun show last week, but thats it.

Not only is Sportsmans Warehouse sold out, but I'm very close to Impact Guns retail store and they don't have a single box on their shelf. I had to buy some Olympic from them to shoot my SKS the other day.

Nope, no Wolf 7.62x39 in this part of Florida. There's something to this as it's (somewhat) scarce on the net as well.

I wouldn't want to hear some bad guy consortium is buying it all for use in Iraq. Rather we have plenty and those #@^&* have the shortage.

Did get Golden Bear from J&G or AIM. Costs a little more but I hear it's good.

Outdoor Marksman, Midway, and Ammoman are all out of Wolf 7.62x39mm.

I've got enough here in my house to last me for quite some time, and I don't shoot that much of it (I'm in the process of buying and shooting a lot of the PS-headstamped Korean M2 ball .30-06 -- it's good stuff, and the cases are great for reloading...fun when shooting the first time, and every time thereafter!), so I'm fine if there's a temporary shortage.

The gun show this weekend in San Francisco had a few pallets of them going for about $120/1000rds, which is about normal for them. They certainly didn't have any shortage.

as Sendtoscott said...the gunshow at the George R Brown in Houston had Wolf ammo out in force...plenty of x39, 223, 45 ACP, 9mm and even the 308.

I actually picked up a 20 rnd box of the 308 just to see how it would shoot in my bolt rifle (sporter mauser).

At 100 yds it was showing a 3" group and left nasty buggers in my barrel but the velocity was between 2650 and 2700 and pretty consistent. My rifle normally shoots less than 1.5" with CERTAIN factory loads and 1" with my handloads.

I am curious as to how the brass cased, boxer primed wolfie will shoot...wonder if they will load 308 in that stuff...

Do say where and how you know about all of these so called complaints. I sell this ammunition everyday and I also deal with the ammunition complaints that are received at Cheaper Than Dirt and I can say that Wolf has no more complaints than any other ammunition. There are those that believe whatever they read on the internet about Wolf Ammunition. If that is what you choose to believe then great I have no problem with you and your beliefs.

I like wolf 223 and continue to order it for plinking. Have had numerous
problems with wolf 9mm in different pistols. I don't complain to anyone
about it, I just stopped ordering it......

There seems to be lots of ammo that is in short supply right now because it seems that there are lots of people hoarding ammo at this time, me included. I have 5K of Wolf 7.62x39 that I bought a couple of years ago for $66/K. I also hoarded SA 5.56 and Aussie and Port 7.62x51 when it was readliy avaliable and cheap. This stuff ain't gonna be cheap forever. The way the Repubs are f'ing up, we might very well be looking at a Dim controlled house in '06 and a Dim pres in '08. Better get it while you can!!

A few places are still selling 7.62x39 Wolf here 20 rounds per box but the price has certainly been creeping up in the past 4 or 5 months. Back then you could find it "on sale" all the time for $1.50 per box, regular price of $2 to $2.25. Now the cheapest you can find it here is $2.79 with some places charging up to $3.99. Most places are just plain out of it. This is SE MI. How much is it over in your part of the woods?

The usual rumors abounding, the paranoids hoarding, and nitwits debating and attempting to debunk speculation from speculation with their own speculation with wars and natural disasters at the center of their theories. You guys are getting lazy, no one's mentioned aliens yet.

I can still find the FMJ 7.62x39 stuff online here and there, but the price has definately gone way up! 120-ish a case +shipping whereas last year I never spent more than 80 or so dollars on it.

The HP 7.62 seems a little easier to find, but I myself avoid it since it does not feed well in my SKS.

The shortage of Wolf is due to the hundreds and hundreds of complaints about the stuff.

but the Silver Bear and the Golden Bear lines are pretty excellent.

You don't know what the heck you're talking about. At all.

I dont know what complaints people are talking about. I shoot best with My AKs when shooting with wolf ammo. I think the ruskies know what ammo works best in their guns (or ones based on mr. kalashnikov, mr. simonov and mr. mosin's ideas anyhow).

I had problems with a shortage of 5.45 earlier in the year but I would chalk that up to the fact that the cartridge is little know and tends to be overshadowed by the 5.56. It's unfortunate too because I've grown to like the mini soviet round.

I hope that crap goes away all together.

Cabela's short on wolf!

Stopped off at our new Cabela's in Utah. Couldn't find any Wolf 9x18. I couldn't even find a spot where it belonged on the shelf. I asked about it and the employee said that they have been having a really hard time getting wolf ammo in stock. He didn't know why.

I've heard this same report from THREE different local ammo suppliers locally. I keep trying get them to bring in more Wolf 54R but they say Wolf is turning down wholesale orders and the supplies across the board are drying up. The same reason is cited by their wholesalers--Wolf got hit with a huge contract to supply x39 to the Iraqi army and has shut down everything else just to meet the demand.

There's no way this is a myth. For one thing they have NO incentive to lie to me since I'm there cash in hand ready to PRE PAY for up to 500 rounds of 54R from Wolf. And on at least one ocassion I was there when he called up his wholesaler and got the story.

The only 54R we can get here is Albanian, which I already have a ton of. I can't take advantage of on-line dealers unless I buy a whole pallet and have it slow boated up here. Canada won't let ORMD ammo through its battle lines.
