Greetings, I have an m1a in a gi fiberglass stock that I want to shorten the length of pull on. It appears only the outside is fiberglass with the inside/core of the stock being a high density foam. I'd like to cut some length off from the butt and I dont care about the cleaning kit compartment. This would not allow the current butt plate to fit and I would likely need to modify something else. I have thought about wood but want to stick with the fiberglass. I know there are some adjustable stocks out there but I have two spare stocks and am looking to do this on the cheap. Any ideas or insights about how to shorten and then have the butt be decent would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh

I'm not familiar with the exact stock you have, but have shortened fiberglass stocks in the past with no problems. The butt plate will most likely have to be epoxied on since there is nothing for screws to bite onto.

With all quality fiberglass stocks the outer shell is made with layers of fiberglass cloth epoxied together with a foam core. Most are made long and meant to be cut to the length needed by the user, but there may be a limit to how much can be cut. It might be a good idea to contact the stock manufacturer for info before cutting.

I'm planning on doing the same thing with one of my M14 synthetic stocks when I get home from a current deployment.

Here is a website that might be of interest to you regarding your project.....

He does all sorts of work on M14/M1A stocks.

Hope this helps.

PS....... I for one would be interested in photo's of your project as it unfolds.

EDIT: Not sure how much you wanna shorten it, but it is possible to utilize an M1 Garand's metal buttplate. this will shorten the LOP somewhat, give you metal instead of a rubber butt pad, decrease overall weight by a few ounces, and allow you to utilize the cleaning kit compartment to boot. It might be worth asking Tony at LAW483.

All I have done to mine as of yet.....is to fill in the selector lever hole on them...plus finish work and paint....

You can glue/epoxy a couple of pieces of wood or plastic, cut to fit into the stock, for the butt plate screws to screw into. Then mount the plate and trim to fit.

Brownells sells "blank" (no holes) universal type plastic butt plates for pretty cheap. You might also take the stock with you, after you cut it, to the gun shows and go through some of the parts bins. You might find a checkered steel butt plate thats close.

gentlemen, thankyou for the help and suggestions. I'm hoping to get started this week and will try to take some pictures.
