My brother is a Deputy Sheriff and has an M-16 in his squad car. I went to his house tonight and fired his M-16 in full auto, two 30 round clips. I was impressed by how accurate it was, but suprised by how much the barrell raised when firing 10-15 round bursts (I have a .223 Remington 788). What a rush!!:)

That's why they went to a 3 round burst and no more fully auto.

It is a Blast isn't it? Problem is that 30 rounds goes in like 3 seconds.

Lucky it was issued ammo, wish he had more but it was a last minute deal!!

SGR,

Reading your post brought back fond memories of the good old days when the government bought the ammo, and there was plenty of it. :)

Just goes to show the Police are arming the officers with weapons and not providing adequate training on what they are issuing and how to use the weapon.

Almost all surplus M16 rifles that have been issued to Police still have 1 in 12 twist barrels and the 62 grain Penetrator rounds are not effective when used in that type of barrel.

50 grain hollowpoints or 55 grain softpoints would be a better choice of ammunition.

If the top cops were thinking rural deputies need weapons with penetration capabilities they should have issued something besides the M16 platform.
A rifled 12 guage or 20 guage shotgun using alloy hardened Brenneke or BRI slugs would be better for this purpose at ranges to 125 meters and I am not aware of cop shops who advocate getting their officers into gunfights at ranges that exceed that parameter.

Full auto has a reason for being,,,,,on a rifle one is better served with a burst limiter if the shooter can't or won't use trigger control and limit themselves to a three or four round burst.

Oh, by the way, M16 rifles are a blast to shoot on full auto!:)

My dept. issues the 55gr for the reason our A1s are 1-12.

Personally i grab my 6920 most of the time. I carry several mags of 75gr TAP and a couple mags of Federal 62gr Tactical bond 223T3 for penetration.

I'd much, much rather have an AR/M16 at 125 yards than a shotgun of any form. YMMV.

Personally, I would choose a 7.62 NATO over the shotgun or the 5.56 but sometimes we don't get the choices we want.
I am really beginning to see the light for 69-77 grain bullets in the 1-7 twist barrels, I like the stuff.
However, it will still not outperform 7.62 Nato.

I've fired the M-16 full auto several times. Sorry guys I don't get the attraction, maybe if I wasn't at Army ranges when I did it.

wait...cops are issued full-autos?

Some depts. These are Army surplus and the dept. gets them a lot cheaper than ordering new rifles.

Some look like they have been put through the ringer though.

We only got 6 so everyone didnt get one and they chose who they wanted to have them.

I just got back from Vegas where we had a friend of mines bachlor party. We went shooting on Monday, it was good fun. Got to shoot a M16, MP5 and the M16 with a 9mm upper. The best part about it was they were also all three suppressed. I think I had the most fun with the MP5. We kept having to stop and wait for the guns to cool off.

They can be. It depends entirely on the department they work for.

Heck, some agencies dont provide ANYTHING. Our deputies have to buy their own pistols... as a result, there is quite an odd assortment of duty weapons.

I guess the county commissioners are cheapskates when the set the budget...

On my 15th birthday my dad rented an early M16 without the forward assist and brass deflector and 200 rds of ammo. By far the best freaking birthday I ever had.
