Had to run my route today. Stopped by the hog trap on the way home because I'd not run it Friday and I was feeling guilty. Nothing in the trap, so moved on. Walking back to the truck, I saw movement in a mott of scrub oak. I drew my Taurus 3" 66 I was carrying and squatted down and looked into a break in the brush and this boar was staring at me, face to face at about 15 yards. I laid the sight right on his head just above the eyes and fired. The pressure wave from the Speer 140 grain JHP blew his right eyeball out of its socket, was pretty impressive. He fell DRT of course. Went back to the van, had the bike on the back, rode down and rapped him up in plastic and drug him out. Took him over to son-in-law's and we skinned him. I've got him on ice now, will butcher in the morning. He's only 80 lbs, a little boar. He had a decent set of tusks growing on him. We trapped a couple a while back that only went 45 lbs and I still have pork left from one of those, though not much. :D I've moved the trap, too, to a better location (I think). It's by a well traveled trail. But, if you can't trap 'em, shoot 'em. LOL!

How much meat do you get off of one? About the same as a similar sized deer?

Good job BTW. I'd love to go hog hunting, but am thankful I'd need to go out of state to do it.

That will be a very fine eating hog. Congratulations.

MC, have you caught up on your rain total, or are you still below normal? You seem to have been hit pretty hard the last few months.

Congrats on that headshot , McGunner. Lucky day !

Im almost gone of hog meat from the 250 lber i took last year. I may try this springtime using my M 96 Swedish mauser 6.5 caliber for the first time. ALready sighted that puppy with Federal Hishok 140 gr SP.

Nice job MC. That is one UGLY pig. But at 80 lbs he'll eat just fine. What is that Taurus 66,a .357? It looks a lot like my 686. We're going to be sending you more water down the Guadalupe they're predicting 3-5" over the next two days and the ground is saturated.

nice wish we had them up here it would be something differnt to shoot at. (the farmer here don't take kindly to target pratice on there pigs lol)

I dont believe it for a second.. no way a TAURUS anything could kill even a small hog at 15 yards...

good shot... glad you're making use of the meat.

I attended a party with 60 pounder that was smoked all day. My wife took a bite and told me I was done deer hunting and to go get her a wild hog.

nice shooting. some years back I got a large dry sow around these parts and after butchering gave 1/2 of the fore-end to a buddy that has one of those 'barrel' type smokers. he had a get-together and smoked it from early a.m. to late afternoon. the kids there were pulling meat off the bone after we cut off what easily would come. one little girl asked 'ski-ray can I have some more of that wild hog'? the dogs just got bones.

Oh, the dought is a distant memory. I gotta wear waders down there, now, water everywhere and more falling this morning.

.357 magnum. I was carrying it CCW and had my carry loads in it, but it worked. :D I have another with 4" barrel, nickel. Those things are amazing shooters and didn't set me back much.

I guess my goose season is going to be pretty well done. Damned river has messed with me all season.:banghead:

One season at our deer camp, one guy killed a deer and I killed a hog the same day. His dad had a HUGE smoker-double decker. He put the hog on the top rack and the deer on the bottom. Smoked them 24 hours. Fed the entire camp for supper. Best eating I ever had!

Congrats! That pig didn't die by the bullet, it see'd itself in the water hole and died o' ugly-fear! That thing's uglier than my daughter's Chihuahua!
