Trapped a boar this morning

I was on the stand before sun up. Heard a clang of metal about 7AM, thought I heard pigs squeal. My trap is about 100 yards off in the brush from my stand. I got down out of the stand earlier than normal about 8AM curiosity killing me as I though I could hear 'em again. Well, there was a big boar 200 or more lbs, could barely pick the thing up, just guessing, and 5 piglets 50 to 75 lbs in with him. I didn't wanna mess with the piglets, shot the boar with my 9mm Kel Tec as I didn't wanna shoot my CVA Wolf and with 777 and have to clean it. I rigged the door, stood back ready to defend myself and let the piglets go. They high tailed it, didn't want anything to do with me. Shot a few pix before gutting. I have to go skin him, now, and get him on ice, just wanted to post a few pix while I took a break. One upper tusk is broken off, the other is needle sharp, but not too long, yet. Not something to mount, but he was a mean sucker. The pigs down there are mostly European wild boar phenotype due to imports stocked by a large ranch nearby in the 30s and lack of feral animals originally, pretty demonic to look at.

Why on earth did you let the piglets go if there's such a pig problem there? I'd have shot them, too...I bet piglet is delicious!

I didn't wanna clean 'em and I didn't wanna feed the vultures with 'em, against my religion. It's my land that I only use for hunting, so more pigs I have the better. There's no crop land anywhere near me, but a couple of large ranches, one of which I share a fence with.

One of the huge benefits of owning this place is the pigs are European in origin. I'm only a few miles down the road from the Powderhorn Ranch. Link to a paper is attached. These boar are near 100 percent pure European boar phenotype. I hate to sell the place because of that, but I wanna move to the hill country and need the cash to purchase land with.

Anyway, I know to some it's a hanging offense to turn pigs loose, but I don't share the ethos so much. I just can't stand to shoot something and let it lay. If my son-in-law were home, i'd given him a call. He usually takes anything I don't want. But, he's in Afghanistan until August.

The great thing about owning your own land is that you don't have to answer to anyone about trapping or killing hogs.

My wife and I want to move to the Rockport area within next two years. Hope to find some hogs to hunt when I get there!

Congrats on the nice hog. Many of our hogs here have European boar blood. Nice trap too.

every day I try to put these vermin on the endangered species list....got a ways to go. I kill every one I see, piglets, sows, boars...todays rain should have them moving.
