I was able to shoot an Stg58 FAL, the M96 carbine, and an M1A Scout at the local shooting fair this weekend. I was very surprized at my impressions of the above three guns:

FAL - low recoil, big, safety hard to reach, sights not bad - not great. Overall lukewarm impression.

Robinson Arms M96 - heavy for .223, low recoil. Lukewarm impression.

M1A Scout - Awesome gun. Good sights, good feel to it. Snappy recoil. Definately my favorite of the three. I can see why it has such a big following.

It is nice to be able to shoot guns you are pondering for a future purchase.

Just swap that metric safety out for an inch style, and your thumb can reach it easily.

Amen! I couldn't figure out what he meant until you said that. I have a pristine pre-ban Aussie L1A1 and the controls fall perfectly to hand. I know the metrics are very popular but the CBA Committee spent years making small changes to see that the troops had a user friendly rifle and it shows.
