A police officer shot last year as she walked along a Flatbush street in uniform told jurors in tears yesterday how she was ambushed by a rooftop gunman whose bullet robbed her of full mobility in her arm.
Police Officer Crystal Jeffrey, who was on the job at the 70th Precinct only 1 1/2 months when she was shot May 17, 2002, said she was walking to a subway station with five other uniformed cops at the end of their shift when she heard gunfire. "As I passed 142 St. Paul's Place, I heard shots ring out. It was a lot of shots," said the officer, who is on restrictive desk duty now at the 78th Precinct in Park Slope.

She told jurors considering the fate of 22-year-old defendant Damian Henry in Brooklyn Supreme Court that she took cover behind a nearby Jeep, as the gunman continued to fire. She then drew her weapon, looking right and left, without firing.

Jeffrey was struck twice in the right arm and once in the left hand.

Since then, the cop who once played basketball for Baruch College says she hasn't been able to lift her right arm all the way up or around. One operation on the arm didn't help improve her mobility.

"I just found out, actually, I have to have another surgery," she said, her voice cracking as the defendant looked on with an expressionless face.

Law-enforcement sources have said Henry shot Jeffrey at about 1:30 a.m. because he was angry about how cops were "harassing" residents and how the criminal case of a relative had been handled.

Another reminder that just because you're shot, you're not out of the fight. Draw, seek cover, and never give up!
