Shot flintlock for first time

Well I started in June with a heap of parts and wood and over the next 6 months built a decent looking long rifle. With lots of help from Muzzleloader builder supply. I took it out to the range today for the first time. Been shooting BP since I was 14 but this was the first FL. Shoot the first round .45 ball and 60 grains of powder ands hit 3 inches low and 1 inch left....not bad. I was so excited I built something that worked. Well it also blew part of the touchhole liner out and so my touchhole went from 2/32 of an inch to more like 22. cal sized. needless to say the next 3 rounds just kind of spit out lower and lower. Well Craftsman screw extractor to the rescue. out cane the old liner and in went a new. The first was just a bad one. The main thing is I made a rifle that worked and all the people at the range came to look at. I'll be back next week to shoot more. And my wife gave me a new 50 cal barrel and gift certificate to MLBS for christmas so now I can get started on #2.

Sounds like a job well done. Isn't great to make something that has a purpose and can be used? Carving and woodworking is a great way to spend time, but the end result almost always sits on a shelf or hangs on a wall. Make a gun or a knife and you have something you can use all the time and enjoy the quality you put into it.
Its also cool to show them off cause most people have no idea you can actually make such things, they never thought about where stuff came from before mass production.

Nothing brings as much joy as a well tuned flintlock. You can't even tell the difference between it and a percussion gun. The joy of the "whoosh!" followed by the dull "booom!" and a heavenly white cloud of sulphorous smoke. Ahhh...

The red-suited fatman left me a Lyman Trade Rifle about 5 days ago. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but looks nice. A .50-cal flintlock...should be a real 'hoot'.

I have shot some BP pistols over the years; 44 1858 Army Remington, 31 "Pocket Remington", single shot "prospectors pistol", and a Walker Colt. This is my first BP Rifle, looking forward to lotza good shootin', old-style.

I built a Thompson Center Renegade many many years ago, in .50 cal.

I LOVE that thing.

A pain in the butt to load, a pain in the butt to shoot, and a SERIOUS pain in the butt to clean, but it is so damned much fun...

I had mine out on Sunday at the range. It was cold and I filled the entire field up with smoke out to the 25 yard berm. All the other shooters I was with really didnt seem to mind not being able to see their targets all that well.
