What are the problems with shooting shot in a rifled barrel? I figure shooting buckshot without a shot cup may cause leading but what about shot that is mostly contained in the wad?

Edit - I wish I new now to fix my typing in a title.

The main problem is the rifling spins the shot column at high RPM.

And it takes off sideways as soon as it exits the muzzle due to the centrifugal force on it.

Your shot pattern will be a donut with an empty hole in the middle where you are aiming at.

The rifling may also cut through the shot cup petals and lead the barrel badly.

PS: You can edit the Shto title by clicking on the Edit and then the Go Advanced button at the bottom of your post.

The rifling in a shotgun slug barrel is quite shallow, so perhaps not too much of a concern for cutting through the shot wad. It could however make a mess of plastic to scrub out ? (Just a guess on my part)

But between potential lead or plastic fowling ,and the most certain lousy pattern , I will stick with a smooth bore for shot loads.

Sounds good to me.

I would like to try the rifled barrel with some #4 Buck. Looks like a HD combo to me. Pop an intruder at 15' and the best surgeon in town couldn't put them back together.

At very close range you're going to make a big zero on the assailant - probably pretty devastating, but further out the pattern gets much larger than a smooth bore would produce.

Here is a simple test

55 or so pellets out 75 did not hit the target, so you have to figure - in your home, in your neighborhood, where do those pellets go?

Yea, what the others said.

I thought my scoped slug gun would be nice for my 10yo to turkey hunt with during youth season.
I patterned it with this in mind with a load of 6's. I got like 1 pellet in a pizza box. Seriously...1 pellet at 35yds.
Shot and rifling doesn't mix.

Thanks for the info and links. I hadn't thought of the donut spread from the rifling.
