Details are still scetchy but my agency was involved in a shooting today up in Phoenix.

4 of ours went to serve an arrest warrant and the SHTF. 1 of the four got a flesh wound but the BG took one right between the eyes and is still alive enough to be talking smack all the way to the hospital :what: . Agency issue is a Glock Model 22 and that office uses Federal TACTICAL 165gr JHP. This is stuff that has filtered down through the grape vine. So this is all hearsay until there is an official release.

Any of our THR Phoenix members hear anything on the boob-tube?

The brain is less vital for some than others, apparently.

Actually, I can recall many instances of massive trauma to the brain from projectiles that failed to kill. The fellow who got the railroad spike shot clean through his head comes to mind. It's my understanding that's one of the main reasons to go for heart/lung shots instead.

Fineous Gage (sp?)...that was a wierd case!

I'm sure everyone remembers the TLC Trauma show where the guy comes into the ER with a rambo style combat knife stuck straight down in the top of his head, HILT Deep!! As I recall, he was walking and talking A-Ok.

Note to self: If SHTF, make it two to COM and one to the neck -- if it doesn't take out the spinal column there's always a chance of at least hitting the carotid artery.

Head shots can do funny things... there was that case in LA where a woman was shot with a .357 Magnum JSP, which hit her dead center in the forehead. The bullet went right through her brain, passing exactly down the "join" between the left and right hemispheres, and exited at the back of the skull. When the cops arrived, she was complaining of a headache! - and subsequently recovered fully, with no after-effects.

Her guardian angel must have been putting in some overtime on that one... :D

I seem to remember a story about a US Service man took a 9mm between the eyes, but it did some weird bouncing and just lodged in his skin (or maybe fell out, just going off memory here).

I have worked 2 shootings where people have been shot in the melon. Both are alive. It should be noted that they are both in jail too.

I also heard a story about a woman that stabbed herself in the neck on purpose all the way to the hilt. When I say stab that really isn't true. She acutally sat in the bathtub and worked the knife in slowly. She would run into something hard and change up the angle to get around it. Once it was all the way in she walked up to a copper in a squad car and started a conversation about something other then the knife in her neck. He was surprised to say the least and asked her about it at the hospital. She then claimed that her boyfriend did it to her. Eventually they got the truth.

I am surprised that a fair amount of gray matter doesn't get pureed with the shock considering how easy a blow to the head can cause damage by shifting the brain. I rather suspect that more or less subtle changes in personality and thought patterns appear down the road if not immediately.

About 30 to 40 years ago some kid was shooting arrows straight up into the air and managed to catch one in the head when it returned. He walked down to a pharmacy and asked the pharmacist to remove the arrow. Don't know what effects that had on him.

I remember seeing a kid that appeared on several talk shows that suffered from a devastating head wound. IIRC, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was hit point blank in the head with a .357 magnum during a convienence store robbery. Im not sure how much damage the bullet really did, but the "after" photos showed nearly half of his head gone. He eventually had plastic surgery done that helped conceil his wound.

I remember reading a bit were a guy raiding a house with his team in the sand box came around a corner and ran into a rag head with a 9mm. the RH grins and pulls the trigger the guy takes the round in the teeth which stop it, the guys spits out the bullet raises his rifle and orders the RH down....needless to say there was much complying.

I did a search on Phineas Gage once and found out that a lot of what has been reported about his case is not actually believed to be true.

I'm sure you can find it if you just Google his name.

Head shots can be strange. A security guard where my mom worked took 1 to the head and it just went around his head and stopped. Our sheriff shot a perp in the forehead with a 45 acp and it knocked the perp out(still trying to find out what the brand was) and my son shot an attacked last year, 2 to the head 38 spl 125 gn xtp, one passed around the guys head and exited behind his left ear, the other is still in there some where.
Shoot 'em in the chest..... :D

Still alive to talk smack....

Yeah, not only go for the COM, but....

Aren't we taught to shoot until the threat is stopped?

To me, that means keep shooting until the threat is STOPPED, motionless, not doing anything.....

That should handle the "smack-talk" non-sense! :D :neener: :p

Bullets do funny things. A BG was shot here in the head threw a windshield which spun all the way around his ballcap and exited the opposite side of the head and went back in the the windshield. And the BG lived, but he was he is now a 3 time loser living at the Walls unit.

I find it distressing that so many gun folks live by various ballistic mantras such as "Two to the chest and one to the head" and believe that chest shots will all hit the heart and lungs and head shots will shut down the nervous system.

What these folks often fail to understand is that just because you hit the general ideal areas does not mean you will get the desired results. For example with head shots, if you don't manage to cause enough significant trauma to the brain or brain stem, then you won't get the incapacitation desired.

Bruddah Al, when they convict/incarcerate this guy, gimme a PM with the name, so I can razz him on the yard.
TheDutchman, The Walls is what our inmates call Central Unit, built in 1914...still in use, featured in the movie Stir Crazy.
As for head wounds, I know a guy, Brackie, who shot himself in the head with a 357. He blew away the parts of his brain that troubled him, as he is now very happy, selling newspapers on street corners. Seriously.
Then there was that picture of the terrorist head shot by a 50BMG. No smack from him....

There are always going to be freak accidents where bullets through the brain don't kill or instantly incapacitate. However, anybody got percentages? I'll bet heavily that the vast majority of people shot in the head, with any caliber, immediately stop what they're doing and lie down on the ground. In fact, in the unlikely event I ever have to do a real Mozambique, I'm still aiming the 3rd shot at the head.

I remember a story from an LEO or someone on this board I believe, where a former NFL player was turning gay tricks in the hood, and approached a cruiser with a .32 round in his thick cro mag forehead with not much in the way of ill effects.

So what should be the mantra, DNS? (yours, mine, etc). "11 to the chest and 4 to the head", or what?
